I did have a some porting work done - CJ-sized exhaust valves, and a bit of hogging out the exhaust ports, especially the air injection boss bumps in the port itself.
I was thinking use it as a 2bbl until I can buy a 650 vacuum secondary, its a 750 double pumper and I agree its a little to large and just gonna waste fuel
I got the engine installed and broke it in for 30 minutes 2200-3000rpm, changed the oil, and it sounds really good, but it sure does idle alot smoother than I thought it would
My buddy came by today and he brought me a set of rebuilt fe heads, he didnt know I made it this farXD but they are c6aer heads,. Would those be worth swapping out the d2 heads?
I wont never know if I can't get this thing tuned right, I been having hell with it, I'm starting to regret this thumpr cam already.. A buddy told about this thumpr cams being really picky with the tune, if I advance the timing any more than where its at, it wont crank when warm and if I advance it with the engine running the idle gets really smooth and you can hardly hear the cam, so the timing Is retarded quite a bit
No bigger than that cam is you should be able to set the base timing around 9-12 degrees, I've ran some large super stock style cams didn't take over 16 degrees base timing to get them running properly.
If it takes a lot of timing to get it running properly you need to recheck the timing chain to make sure it not off a tooth.
Worked on a friends 351 years ago, it wouldn't idle below 32 degrees timing, cam timing was off a tooth.
Everything is set right, when the motor is running, I can put enough timing in it to where it will die and ditto for retarding it, its pulling about 8-9 1/2 inches of vacuum but if I advance it any more even just a hair theres way to much cranking pressure and the starter wont turn the motor over
