I have a 1990 ranger 2.9 L 5 speed with over drive. I've tried 3 thermostats. Flushed coolant system compleatly twice sprayed all derby out of radiator front n back. Checked water pump its good. I drive it 5 or 10 minutes and the over flow is boiling and pumps fluid to the ground. Im also compleatly in the red. Help please.
Excessive exhaust back pressure from a restriction, like a clogged cat converter, muffler, kinked exhaust pipe, maybe a blown head gasket & or maybe a radiator cap that's not sealing good, & or a fan clutch that's not locking up, are some thoughts that come to mind. Let us know what you find.
With that engine, I'd be looking for cracked cylinder heads. You can check for CO or CO2 in the radiator using a testing machine that detects its presence. There may be a test strip available that will respond. A surgeons glove stretched over the radiator cap that gets REAL BIG might be another indicator.
If you have access to a 'bore scope' that will fit your plug holes, you can look around without disassembling the cylinder heads.
I think the problems with radiator, pump and clogged converter would take longer than 5 minutes to overheat the engine as much as described, but things vary.
