I have a 68 ford v8 360cid. Its been sitting for a year so I cleaned and flushed the fuel tank, put a new carbuerator kit, new 45 autolite spark plugs, with a new coil. I also put new points with condenser. Ive been having problems adjusting the float bowl now plus I lose power once Im in third gear. I thought i was flooding the carb with too much fuel in the bowl, so I'd bent the tang to allow enough fuel in the bowl but I still lack power once Im in third gear, and idea what the problem is..levi
Give us some more information, Ralph. In 1st and 2nd, is the engine running smooth, providing adequate power? Are you sure you don't have any vacuum leaks? Give us some symptoms to work with.

Well as for as running smooth while in 1st and 2nd, the truck fights but runs rough, once I but it into third and give it gas the engine just shuts off. Now I have a serious problems with backfiring, I changed the power value, retimed it, cleans the plugs, made sure the points are within spec's, and still I have a big flame shooting out of the carb. I have a question, if I take out the number one plug and turn the engine unitl I feel a push of air from the number one plug, and the rotor is pointing to the number one firing position, should the timing mark be line up with the pointer on the bell housing. As for the leak Ive checked all I can think of, maybe you can give me some points . When it fires up I have to close the choke plate until is runs, then like it passes air then flames shoot out, what gives.....
My truck did the same stuff. I believe the mechanic replaced the electric choke on the carb, set timing. It still does it every now and then. You might have a vacuum problem too. Half my vac lines were missing when I took it in.
Does the truck run at all now?are your wires mixed up on your distrubitor cap?I messed up my wires when i was changing them it still ran however not to well.
Let's see. Re the timing mark, yes, when the piston comes up on its compression stroke on #1, the rotor should be pointing to the #1 plug. This is called Top Dead Center but that's not where you time your engine. Check the book for yours; my 352 times at 8 degrees Before Top Dead Center. With all the backfiring I'm wondering as someone else said if your plug wires are improperly installed or it's really out of time. Otherwise, maybe you're just dumping too much gas. Can you set your carburetor back to its baseline?

I was able to time it to 6btdc like the books says, and made sure all the cables to the plugs were correct according to the manual, i even numbered them with tape, I also installed a new fuel pump with new filter after I cleaned the fuel tank and lines. So I guess the problems is with my manual carb letting too much gas in the carb, if you bend the tag up, will this allow more fuel in the carb? I never set the carburetor back to its baseline, and clues?
The tang, of course, determines the float's relation to the needle which allows fuel to pass. I'm not sure what you mean when you say "... bend the tang up" but I would follow the directions in your carb rebuild kit. They usually come with a little paper gauge and you hold the carb body up and measure the distance to some point on the float (haven't done this in a long time). Anyhow, I think your problem is simple; we just need to figure out what it is.
Let's see... you checked your timing and plug wires. Re timing, did you disconnect and plug your vacuum advance line? My son forgot that last time and his timing was so far off that it backfired and shot a big flame back up from the carb. He thought it was pretty "cool."
Re the carb baseline, I just meant that you should try and restore it to its previous state before you changed anything. Too bad engines aren't like Windows XP!

Also check you vacuum advance to make sure that it is working properly. If you have a leak in your diphram inside the vacuum advance not only would you have a vacuum leak but as you incressed the speed of you engine the timeing would not advance and that might cause you to be out of time enough to cause the problems your having. Just a guess i hope this helps.
