Wheeling Stories

Jeez where should I start?! One night my little brother and I decided to take his 86 Jeep Cherokee out muddin, I followed him out in my 84 F150 just in case he just stuck. I parked my truck at the trail head and we took the Jeep out in the field to play. He had a brand new set of ATs on it so we weren't too worried about getting stuck. So we headed do the trail and went through every mudhole along the way. We got into an open spot at the end of trail, it was flooded and really muddy. We started whippin some donuts and got crossed up really bad in some deep ruts. My brother rocked it back and forth only to bury it to the frame. So I walked back and got my truck to pull the Jeep out. I locked the hubs and headed back down the trail to where the Jeep was buried. At the time I was running a bald set of Uniroyal Laredos on my F150. As soon as I hit the mud I had to flat foot it to keep what little tread I had clean. I pulled up to the front of the Jeep with the intent of pulling it out in reverse. We got the towstrap hooked up and I put my F150 in reverse to pull the Jeep out. As soon as I let the clutch out all 4 wheels broke loose. I mashed on it rocking it back and forth only to bury the F150 in the mud also. I managed to find someone who owned a 4wd who lived near the field where we were playing. He had a 90 S10 Blazer with a 4.3 V6, He tugged at My F150 for about a half an hour and gained nothing. My brother Ran home to call for a wrecker but instead found help from one his buddy's sister's boyfriend. He had a 95 F250 PSD 4wd, he came out and got my F150 out with just a couple quick yanks. Once I got out I pulled my truck around to the rear of the Jeep and pulled it out no problem. I have many more stories to tell but I think some of the rest of you guy need to share some of your stories!

me and my dad had just finished restoring an 82 jeep CJ5 starting with a new frame. well i thought the best way to take it out on it's first run would be to go to this fun riverside wheeling spot (after the engine was fully broken in might i add.) well me and a friend were having a blast and this jeep was going though everything i could find so we went to the edge of the river and desided to do a water crossing! well everything was going fine when suddenly the front dropped, so i quickly stopped and jammed it in reverse and got back to shore only to fine that i had wrecked the shifter linkage in the prossess. well me being as smart as i was, i didn't bring anything but a screw driver and a ajustible wrench! and it was stuck in reverse with the shifter in my lap. i got the the top of the tranny with my trusty screw driver and was able to get it in third gear. so i put it in 4low and drove out of the place, then put it in 2 hi for the ride home, 30 miles! at 45 mph in a 70 zone. later that day me and that same friend desided we didn't want to be done for the day, so we got into my 77 f150 4x4 and went back. we got bored again and my friend had the bight idea of trying that river crossing agian, because my truck sits higher we thought we could do it (at least he thought we could do it) so i tried it in a different place this time and sank at the edge of the river up to my doors in good old iowa clay/mud mix we must have dug for 4 hours before help finally arived ( i had gone into town first to se if i could get someone with a tractor) took and hour to get the tracktor back there close enough to hook up and yanked me out. when we got back to the road i felt it pulling hard and driving funny, so got out and looked and saw the steering was all bent up, found out later there were big logs and rocks under all the muck that the front was sitting on chewing up my steering. so i got to limp the truck home and explain to my dad why his jeep and my truck are in his garage broke. he just called me stupid and said fix it soon. what a bad day! even worse it i didn't take that oprotunity to convert to a better style steering setup, i put it back together with stock parts! talk about stupid! i got many others too, but thats enough for now.

Well here's another one! My buddy and I were out wheeling our trucks in a designated ORV area (now shut down unfortunately) He had his 82 Bronco (302 automatic) and I had the trusty ol 84 F150 (300 six, 4spd, 4wd). We were out playing in the mud holes and sand pits. Neither of us had gotten stuck or had any mechanical problems with our rigs. After a couple hours it started to get pretty dark so we decided to head back home. My buddies Bronco didn't have any auxilary lighting which didn't help matters. On our way out of the woods (I was leading) This drunken guy comes stumbling out of the trees waving his hands in the air with a beer in his hand. It turns out him any a couple of his buddies were out wheeling down in some of the old logging trails down in the gully, and got their rig stuck. I flipped on my roof mounted lights and aimed them down into the gully to where they had gotten stuck. I got out of my truck and walked the trail leading down to where they had gotten stuck. It was a steep hill with deep ruts left by the logging skidders and other equipment. Confident with my equipment I shifted my transfer case into low range, popped it in granny low and headed down the hill to where they had were hung up. They were driving a nicely set up 74 Chevy Blazer K5 (built 327/TH350, 4in lift, 33s), they were driving along and got the front diff and transfer case skid plate hung up on a tree stump. I hooked a towstrap to my F150 and handed the other guy the other end to hook to the Blazer. I got in my truck and tugged at it a couple times before I gave er hell and attempted to yank him loose. We gained nothing from this accept a broken towstrap. I found a bottle jack in the back of my truck. I stacked a few logs under the other guy's front axle and placed the jack under it. I then jacked the front axle up just high enough to lift the diff off the stump I then used my truck to pull the Blazer free of the stump. One they were freed from their predicament the owner of the truck handed me a 20 dollar bill. That is the great thing about 4 wheeling, there is always somebody out there willing to give you a hand when you get stuck. I too have been resqued a couple times, yep many more stories to come.

This story happend close to home. I was in my '81 F100 (300 six, 2wd) while it still had stock size tires on it. It had just rained the day before and i was near a swamp and I decided to see if I could drive through the ditch. Me, being only 15, said to myself, " I have T-Lok, I can get through anything." Oh how wrong I was. Rear bumper got caught on the other side of the ditch so my tires were off the ground. t-Lok didn't work too well that time. Other time I was driving around with my girlfriend by that same swamp and decided to drive out by my baitpile by my deerstand. Well, by the time I looked and seen the front tires sunk into the ground, it was a little late. Not long after that I put on 31x10.50 tires. Haven't tried the ditch or swamp again...maybe someday.

I got stuck in a ditch like you did BOSS50, but with my 4wd F150 300 six. I was on lunch break back when I was in high school, it was in the winter time and there was a decent amount of snow on the ground. A couple of my buddies dared me to drive through a ditch that was on the end of the parking. We drove our trucks through it all the time, but this time it was full of snow from the snow plows going by. I got cocky stuck the T-case in low range and the tranny in third gear, and dumped the clutch. I busted through the snow back and into the ditch. I was doing fine until my front tires can over the crest on the other side, suddenly I lost all forward movement. I stuffed the clutch and stuck er in second and mashed on it, still on movement. I rolled down my window and looked out to see my rear bumper had disappeared in the snow. I shifted the T-case into 4hi and put it in reverse, as soon as I let the clutch out all 4 broke loose. I tried rocking it out and didn't move an inch! Finally my buddy hooked a towstrap to my trailer hitch and pulled me out with his 88 F150 2wd 302. That was before the add-a-leafs, 31s, and the no-slip locker...Hmmm I wonder if I can make it now? Yes many more stories to come!

about a year or so ago i was out at a local wheeling spot and got out to have a few beverages. well while my friends and i were talking were heard alot of noise going on a little ways off. just alot of peoples voices. well after a half hour or so we decided to go take a look and see whats going on. turns out there was a dodge ram on 38s and a chevy z71 on 36s stuck in a lake bottom. well they had been there for a few hours so they shut their trucks off (dumb move) and wouldnt start back up. well i had a few cold beverages in me and decided to flex my ford muscles a bit and help them out. we hooked one chain from the rear of the dodge to the front of the z71 and one chain from my rear bumper to the rear of the z71 and tried pulling them out in 2 wheel drive (have locker) didnt budge them but i really didnt expect that idea to work but i just had to try it. so i lock burtha down in 4 low and take off in 3rd gear. after a few tire revolutions of tire spin i dug down to solid ground and out they came. it was a great feeling to brag to the chevy and dodge guy that i pulled them both out at the same time without their trucks even running the were pretty cool about it and weve even become pretty good friends and go wheeling together now. ever time they ask me to go i just have to give em a nudge and say what? you afraid that if you go without me youll get stuck and have to spend the night in your truck? they usually flip me the bird in good fun after that lol

Broken Drive Shaft
Well, in a nutshell, I broke my driveshaft. How is this possible? Ah, all by the power of turbo diesels!
There is something I must explain. My 4x4 was not working. I had just recently had a new seal put on my front axle, and hte mechanic had failed to test the 4x4 to make sure it was working. It wasn't. I knew that it wasn't, yet i wasn't going to quit and ruin my fun off-roading excursion.

My friend and I were off-roading, and at the time when I broke it, rock climbing (we were mudding and rock climbing all day). I was negociating my way up a 4 or 5 foot incline that had a lot of "erosion canals" about 1' wide and deep each. In 4x4 it would have been no problem. Ah, but I was in 2x4. All of the power from my F-350 IDI Turbo diesel was going to my two rear wheels. Yet there was a problem, my rear two wheels were locked in some "erosion canals" (as I call them). This caused the wheels to not want to spin, but the engine and the driveshaft wanted too, and to do thus, something had to give. And there went my driveshaft. It made two loud clunks (hitting my diesel tank's skid plate). I was the only one in my truck at the time, but one of my friends walked on over to my window, with a big grin, as I was rolling back down the hill slowly. I was giving it gas, yet still rolling backwards. Odd, I thought. And that is when it hit me. Rolling down hill while giving it gas + Friend trying not to laugh + Clunk Clunk = Broken Driveshaft. I knew before he had even let a word roll out of his mouth. I wasn't too mad, and I knew that these things would happen eventually and the time had come for one of "these things."

Long Live TEXAS.

Well here goes again! I was back in high school, we had a really bad snow storm and school was cancelled. I was out shoveling off the back porch at my house when my buddy came knocking at the front door. "Dude I got the Duster stuck!" He went out to our usual stomping grounds to test how his brand new BFG mud terrains would do out in the sand pits filled with snow on his 79 Plymouth Trailduster 4wd. So I went out to the driveway and fired up my trusty old 84 F150, went back into the garage and grabbed a couple boards, shovels, and my extra towstraps (always carry a couple in the truck). We headed out there to rescue the buried Plymouth, there was a 3ft deep snow drift blocking the trail head. Not at all worried I popped er in 4hi and broke through no problem, the snow on the trails was a foot and a half two feet deep. This was a bit challenging for my near bald Uniroyal Laredos, so I had to stay on the throttle pretty good to keep from getting stuck myself. We drove for about an eighth of a mile or so when we arrived at the pits. Sure enough there was my buddies Plymouth buried half way up it's doors at the bottom of the sand pit. He got into his truck to show me that none of his tires were any longer touching the ground. I pulled up as close as I could with out going into the pit myself. He hooked a tow strap to his rear mounted receiver and then to one of my front mounted towhooks. He got in his truck and started it, I put mine in reverse and tugged at it a little before I mashed on it. The first couple yanks were not quite enough, so I stuck my t-case into low range. This time I put it right to the mat, and yanked with all the ol 300 six had; and out she came! Not a real crazy story but it's always fun to talk about pulling out other trucks, especially Chevys and Dodges (and Plymouths!) Yes more to come!

Mudding in an Oldsmobile, a Caddy, and more. Pulled a 4x4 Blazer and a chevy 1/2 ton out of a creek with a Mustang. Left my truck miles off of some trail in a hole until I could find someone willing to pull it two days later. Geez, I can't even remember em all, here is the latest:

Ok heres a story. Me and my friend always went mudding every night when they got off work at midnight. We took a toyota corolla that I traded a sega genisis for. It since has become a monster, but not 7 years ago. We took it to a trail, I had the diff welded, and a dual setup of four wheeler tires for the back that we put on when we got there. We had our fun and made several high speed passes through some muck, when my electrical messed up and died right in the middle. It would not start and we were stuck. We pushed and pulled for hours but had no go. My winch had drained the battery to death without getting us out. Then we noticed that if we could move the car over about 6 feet, it was flat ground and we could push start it. Now let me explain the susp.. The front was lifted about 4 inches with the largest tire I could fit, a 29. The rear however was a different story. A axle over, 3 inch lift blocks and foot long shakles gave me about 10 inches of lift. and I had a plate coming off the rear bumper that the winch was on, so I made the sacrifice, see I have been working out since I was 12 and am hardcore, 3 years after this happened I won a world event, anyways I laid down in the mud and water under the rear bumper and had to hold my face out of the muck. Then I would leg press the *** end into the air any Benji and Jeremy would push the car sideways till I fell over and the car moved. After several times we had moved it far enough. Rested up and then push started it in about 4 inchs of mud. Needless to say we went home and lucky us the sun was there to shine the way.
I also used to have a 89 caravan that I used to drive till I destroyed the diff. I once went to my cousins aid, he had a toyota on 33s and had a friend with a jeep cherokee on 31s and a friend with a chevy 2wd all stuck in a giant drainage ditch. The van pulled them all out, while I laughed all the way. One trip in my B2 to some other trails I piled about four other guys in with me and was on our way. At the time it had stock engine and 31 all terrains. We got to a spot that was deeply rutted. I tried my damndest to straddle them, but we slid in, sideways. The back tires in one rut and the front in the other. In front of us 5 ft, a drop off to a river, and trees to our behind. Tried and tried to rock it and push it out. No avail. Finally while they were all out and watching, I gave it hell with the wheel turned all the way left. It started moving sideways... It did this for about 50 yards until I came to harder ground. Now that was some fun stuff. It was bucking and shaking like crazy. The guys were just screaming and laughing. Thank god I now have winches and straps, chains, and other vehicles to get myself out of problems. I work at the Port of Catoosa near Tulsa in Oklahoma and work with a Crane, when a cable gets just a few broken strands they discard it and I claim it. The cables we use on coils is a 1.25 in by 16 ft. long and costs 275 a piece new. I have a shed full of cables from 5/8 up to those inch and a quarters. Along with about 50 basically brand new 4 to 6 inch straps ranging from 16 to 20 ft long. Not to mention the shackles, etc. When I drum up another interesting story from my past or present I will throw it in somewhere.

Well this one does not involve my 84, but it's still pretty cool. My buddy and I were sitting in 7th hour English class when a couple of our other buddies came into the classroom . They were covered from waist to toe with mud. It turns out during lunch hour they decided to take my one buddies 82 AMC Eagle Wagon 4wd off roading. They were out playing in the flooded blueberry fields when the 4wd went out in the wagon and they got stuck. They tried rocking it out only to bury it worse and blow out the rear U-joint, that is when they decided to go back to the school for help. We decided to take my one buddies 79 Plymouth Trailduster to retrieve the mired AMC. He had better tires for mud and more gas in the tank than I did. So we headed out there to to pull it out, this was when the owner of the property came out with a 12 guage shot gun. Let's just say he was a little pissed. We hooked a towstrap to the front of the AMC and the other end to the Trailduster. My buddy locked his t-case down in low lock and matted it in reverse, after a couple really hard yanks the wagon was finally freed. He then towed the Crippled AMC back to the high school were it sat for two days before they finally fixed the rear driveshaft.

hehehe when i was 18 i bought my first new 79 f1504x4 xlt longbed, i would have my license in 2 weeks so i could not legally drive it. i could not wait so me and my little bro went and did a little four wheelin b4 school. it was in the new subdivision still under construction and it had rained pretty hard the day b4. i was hittin some mud when i fell into an overdig that they had just backfilled with some dirt, not compacted at all. by the time i got done (had to go to catch the school bus) messin around tryin to get out i had buried it to the frame rails. after school it took a tow truck and another four wheel drive to pull it out of the mud.

that was the first of many many to come LOL

Here's my story

My friend had just gotten his licence a couple of weeks before, and his parents were letting him drive and 86 F150 4x4, 302 auto. And I kept telling him that we should go muddin some time soon. As luck would have it, it rained. So he came out to my place picked me up and we started heading out to some old dirt roads. They weren't exactlly as fun as we wanted, so drivin around we found a nice dirt field with plenty of standing water in places. There was know question we had to go into it. as we were playing around in there, for about 20 min, we realised we got the truck very dirty, and he was not suppose to go off roading. We went back to town to clean off the truck, when he put the money in the pressure wand shot up and slammed into the side of the truck. Now if U knew his dad, he was very perticular about this truck (hense the reason for not wanting his son to go offroading with it) There was no a very small dint that we actually couldn't see, but his dad could, and grounded him for 2 weeks.

Also the field we went on turned out to be my dad's bosses field. And to this day he still think that "he is gonna catch those crazy punks that trashed his field"
