Hey guys, just wondering how many pallets of grass my F150 can tow with a double axle trailer. I got a 4.6L Triton with 3.73 gears with the automatic tranny.
I just wanna know how much she can haul before I load her all up. I heard grass weighs alot. Anyone know about how much each pallet weighs?
I am assuming that you are talking about sod. If that is the case, then I'm not sure that there is a 'standard' weight by which sod is measured. There are to many variables that go into it, such as the length and width of the pieces cut; and how thick they cut them (I'm assuming that each sod farm cuts to a different thickness). Then you have the variable of the size of the pallet. A small pallet (L*W) will obviously hold less than a big pallet. Then on the otherhand, how high is the place going to stack the sod on whatever size pallet they use.
So as you can see, your question isn't that simple. Also another factor to consider is the brakes on your trailer - are they good? And do you have a good brake controller in the truck?
Well, asked them a few questions and they told me that they cut they cut each piece at about 2ft x 1.5ft. And each is between 2.5in. and 3in. in thickness. They load about 70 to 80 pieces of sod onto each pallet.
As for the trailer it is an 8x12 double axle trailer with no brakes. The only brakes I'll have are on the F150.
Sorry for the limited info., it's just that I've never really towed anything with a trailer.
70-80 pieces/pallet? That's a big pallet of sod. I can haul 1 pallet in my Flareside with 50 pieces (500 sq. ft) of sod. You should figure that each piece weighs about 50# per roll.
Well, I got it done with my truck F150. She hauled with no problem.
I told them to load both pallets behind and over both axles of the trailer. The rear of the truck sunk but it held up pretty well.
I thought since my truck had a lowered suspension that it might have a little problem holding up all that weight, but it didn't
The brakes were a little weak though, but thats my only complaint.
It ran around 2000-2500 RPM's throughout the whole trip on the highway at about 60-70mph.
The 3.73 gears healped out some too.
And the tranny didn't downshift constantly, probably because of the flat plains here in Texas.
I've already made 4 trips and I'm still surprised she can haul that much.
