I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions on how to make it stop blowing black smoke. Its a 1991 Ford Ranger 4.0 Litre XLT. I have replaced the plugs, wires and battery(the altenator was replaced about a year ago too).
Does the distributor box go bad after time? If so, how much would a new one be? Where would I get it from?
P.S. It only blows black smoke if floored to above 3000RPM's.
now i am no expert at this but of the info i picked up overe the years black smoke indicates the vehicle is running rich(too much fuel)
white smoke is oil being burned
blue smoke is coolant being burned
too much fuel could be caused by quite a few things such as a faulty sensor sending the wrong signals to the computer possibly faulty injectors...possibly the fuel pressure regulator is bad...is the check engine light on at all? if so take it to auto zone or youre local parts store and have them pull the codes
if not get a haynes manual it will be very handy in fixing just about any problems you have with the truck... ill leave you with that and let one of the more knowledgeable people take over in letting you know how to test these things and more
The check engine light does come on after about 30 minutes of driving. To do the test will I have to drive around for a 30 minute period and test it while its running?
had similar issues, replaced O2 sensor, cleaned IAC,throttle body, checked FPR to be sure vacum line was not wet with gas, double checked all grounds and computer, ,,,one or all of those things fixed the black smoke issue, just did not fix the real problem of no power
another quick check for black smoke is make sure your coolant temp sensor isn't bad.. it will make the computer demand too muck fuel if it's bad... i'm not sure if the 4.0 has a MAP sensor, but if it does, check that for bad sensor or bad vacuum line.. it can cause a running rich/black smoke problem
