Hello All!
My dilema!
Picked up a 1969 f100 had been sitting in a barn for years I got it from someone else who got it from barn . Was supposed to run, it did but not for long. Oil sump was froze up and twisted the pump shaft off. Fried the lower end.
Picked up used motor through a friend. It originally had 360 and I am now putting in 390. Spent a bunch of time cleaning, polishing painting etc along with some new outer parts double roller timing chain high performance water pump new exhaust manifolds ( both original were broke. You get the picture. The motor was supposed to be a built motor ,I know the guy who did it and he is one of the higher reputations around. Supposed to be named pistons the works with an edelbrock intake and edelbrock carb. I'm excited to hear it run. Already to bolt tranny up and stick it! One big problem. The motor was hooked to a 4 speed and I'm hooking to a auto C6 so I go to use flex plate from original 360 and big problem Don't bolt up bolt pattern off. Did some preliminary checking online just figured I needed flex plate from 390. But when I cross referenced them they show same plate. I do not know what year new motor is so could not reference that way.
The 360 had a half moon notch on the crank the 390 doesn't. Can anyone give me an idea on whats up?
Use to do this stuff years ago and loved it! But been awhile, retired now have the time and loving working on this old truck!
Currently, as I write this, I'm putting my C-4 back in my '69 F100 with a 240 (presently taking a break and saw your post) --I realize my engine/transmission are different from yours but, I was running into the same problem night before last, when trying to stab the transmission to the new flexplate I just put on --could NOT get the torque converter studs to line up with and go through the holes in the flexplate.
I don't know if your torque converter has a drain plug in it or not (? ) but, I finally wised up and I used the one on mine to guide the studs through the flexplate. --description in the following link.
Did a full spin and nothing lines up, get 4 in a row to line up but last 2 won't go? Has me baffled. Should fit as far as I know. I know the cranks are different 360- 390 but didn't think it would change the plate
The problem is not bolting to tranny, problem is bolting to the crank.
Ah, I understand what you're saying now.
If you get that sorted out and then the converter studs don't want to line up with their holes in the flexplate, what I did to get mine to line up will work.
The protrusion sticking out in the center of the flexplate should go towards the crankshaft. If it's facing rearwards, the center (6) holes are not going to index IF the plate is installed 180° out.
Must have been a total bone head last night and did not try all combinations.went out this morning spun it around and bolted it right up.thanks guys. New it had to fit!

It happens to the best of us. Glad it was a simple fix and no additional out-lay of cash was required to resolve it.
