Fuel Cap Reommendations?

I've gone through two fuel caps on my '56 F500. Both caps had gaskets that failed in just a few months - dried up and cracked. The first came from Mid-Fifty. This latest one is from NAPA. Does anyone have a fuel cap on their '56 that has a gasket that actually lasts?!

What I believe to be the original gas cap gasket on my 1949 F4 was cracked when I got the truck. I made a gasket that has worked perfectly in the two years plus that I've had the truck on the road. Not hard to make at all with good gasket material. Cut it to fit around the inside, open up one small notch to fit over the locking ears and you can fit it into position. You will have to twist the gasket to get it over the locking center ears but it can be done. Really, not a bad job at all.
Edit: I believe I must have made a gasket for my '56 as well.

I never would have thought to make my own. Clever. I'll give it a go!

I've thought of going with the Ford Cap-less gas cap from a '13 Focus

Does it have a built in vent system? I would suspect it does not.

Ray is 100% correct. Your cap must be vented. Also those that you get from some of the various suppliers fit and are supposed to be for our year trucks but they are non-vented. The truck will drive for a few miles until the system warms up and then it will stall. Even if you remove the cap it takes a bit to get the engine started again, particularly on a warm day, as you have vapor locked the fuel line. Leave the hood up and when it cools down it will start. Leave the cap off until you get home and you will be OK.
