ok well i havent got the motor back but i have been thinking about gas mileage. i have talked to some that say they get crappy gas mileage out of their 351m/400 and some that say its decent. well a dad of a friends put a k&n air filter and a tornado on an 89 chevy 1/2 pickup. he said he is getting over 3 more miles to a gallon. i was wondering if anyone has put either or both of these on the 351m/400 engines and if it was worth the money. i have heard that the tornado works for some and not for others is this the case with the 351m/400 motors? i think the k&n air filter always helps it seems. so any feedback on the tornado or k&n airfilter for a 351m/ 400 would be appreciated.
The engine in my truck gets about 10 mpg,, fast, slow. a/c on, off, doesnt really matter,,, i dont care about the mileage or if i did i guess id be driving a toyota
well im looking for around 10-12 range. i dont know what it got in stock form but the 351m/400 i have seen a range from 7-16 or so. looking for 10-12 hopefully.
My truck has the 400, a/c, 3.50 gears, stock size tires, and i normally drive 75-80 mph and i average 10. The engine in my truck is stock, with a 2 bbl.
With a manual transmission, 10 to 12 mpg is normal for 3.5:1 axle gears and 31" tires. As long as you drive sensibly and keep the engine well tuned, you should have no problem.
EPA rating for the 1979 F100 with 351M engine (49-state) was 13 mpg, with either manual or automatic transmission. The CA truck (automatic only) was rated 11 mpg.
