thermostat question

our 84 f250 4x4 t19 4sp had a 180• t stat. when it was recommended to use a 190• for better heat/ fuel burn, we put in the 190.

it seems like this truck ran better, cooler, more efficiently, even when hauling 2 horses on a hot day with the 180....

it has a standardt19 4 sp, no extra tranny or oil coolers like the automatics. would that make any difference? cooling system and fuel system are clean, redone, and we run chevron with stanadyne.

also.....another weird thing is when i open the coolant overflow thing, it has that old hose smell. all the hoses are fairly new, "gates" brand, except the bottom hose, which is t'd to the external tank heater.

i am wondering....should i go back to the 180? or stay with the 190?

when running some grades recently while hauling the horses, on a medium hot day (80's) temp rose to 198* and settled back well afterward.

other than that, this old truck is doin fine. always maintainance and wrenching involved on the 6.9.....

What brand thermostat did you use? Aftermarket ones don't work right in this truck, only the OEM Motorcraft should be used.

its a motorcraft. we use the good oem parts. the 180 was also motorcraft.
this is just turning into a coolant or hose smell question, possibly related to the proper t- stat....and wondering what the rest of you guys have come up with.
