Starter problems
Hey guys, im having trouble with the starter. It will crank most times but from time to time (more often when hot) the starter will just spin but not engage. Pulled the starter off and had it checked but everything is fine with it. Any advice on a possible reasoning. Thanks

The pinion should kick out when the starter is energized. If it does fine on the bench and the truck you may have stripped some teeth on your flywheel (or flexplate). Take the starter out and shine a light in where it mounts and check the flywheel (or flexplate) teeth for damage.

The drive(bendix) in the starter is bad. Just the drive can be replaced. Ford does not sell just the drive, Standard and Wilson are available. Which engine do you have?
If you replace this yourself, be careful not to pull the armature back and out of the brushes.
