I've got an oil cooler on order and am thinking of deleting the EGR while I'm inside. For a number of reasons, I'm low on cash and was considering a stealth delete.
Does anyone know where to get the stainless steel plugs? What size are they? Does anyone know a Tig welder in Houston? Do you think a welding shop would charge a lot to just cut some plugs?
Could there be anything wrong with my EGR cooler that would make it unsuitable for a stealth delete?

I cant give you accurate numbers for welding, because i do most of mine myself. However, unless you have a buddy thatll do it for a case of cold ones, i cant imagine you would be saving any money welding up your egr.
Essentially, do you want to spend the money on a kit, or spend the money on the service of getting it welded?
I believe you can get *not crap* ones on amazon for 60-80 dollars. Make sure it has a new up pipe however if you do to avoid the stock one cracking.
Out of curiosity, do you want to d9 the stealth delete for price or playing safe with the law? Im from ny and every state has different laws on that bull schmitt.

just trying to save a few dollars. The delete kits I've seen for sale are a couple of hundred dollars. I'll go look on ebay, how can I tell the not crap ones?
I don't have a legal issue here in Tx. The inspection only checks lights, brakes, etc., nothing with the exhaust or pollution control.

Stainless steel is one of the easiest metals to weld with a Gas Tungsten Arc Welder (GTAW, Formerly known as "TIG") Easier than mild steel and certainly easier than welding aluminum!
Stainless steel can be obtained at any metal supplier but you may have to buy a much larger piece than you need to do the job. Sometimes you can find SS pieces on ebay in close to the size you want.
If you have a decent drill press and a good hole saw, you can cut your own disc close to the size you want and grind it to the right size. (BUT, you'll need to use a hole saw that can cut SS and a grinding wheel suitable for SS)
You can also cut SS with the right saw or you can use a plasma cutter.
Most welding shops have plasma cutters but cutting a small "disc" free hand with a plasma cutter is not easy (there'll be a LOT of grinding! )
I would make up a "jig" to rotate the metal and a "holder" to hold the "torch" if I was going to make up a bunch of same size discs.
If I were cut 2 discs "one-off" and weld up the ends of an EGR cooler, it would probably take me somewhere between 1-2 hrs........spending most of the time making the discs
If you walked into my shop with the EGR cooler and the discs already fitted to it, the actual welding might only take me 20 min or less, including the set-up.
I am thinking about doing the same thing with my EGR cooler but I may just cut it open and completely remove the heat exchanger internals before I make my blocking plates!
If you lived near me and you had the discs, I'd weld it up for a "cold one"!!
Thx, Rick. That sounds pretty straightforward. There's a TIG shop near me. I think I'll go by this afternoon and ask them what they'd charge. May not be cheaper than the ebay kits, but I might get it done quicker than waiting for the shipment. My oil cooler is supposed to get here tomorrow or Wednesday and would like to start putting this back together.
Tell me about it. I've been checking here, trying to find a piece of scrap stainless to make plugs out of. No luck yet. One welding shop wanted to charge me $50 if I provided the plugs. Does yours have the up pipe? Gaskets?
Yeppers, new in the box. 50 plus shipping, I think that's a deal. It was in my dead dog file shelf. Found it looking for some other stuff. My phone number is in my profile........I think

cool, I'd rather buy from an FTE brother than Ebay, but tell me - how is it different from this one on Ebay for $30 with free shipping. He's a Top Rated Plus seller and has sold 1500 units at that price.
That's cheap, I couldn't tell ya. I'm sure it's made in China
yeah, prolly is. There's actually many of them around that price. But yours is essentially the same parts and everything? I'm trying to learn the difference between all these. Just looking at it, I can't see any parts that could really be poor quality. It's just two flanged pipes, a hose, bolts, nuts, and clamps. I expect my original bolts, hose and clamps will work with this too.
