I would go 450 just for the wide track. That's a pretty significant upgrade for a truck that long.
Here's what I'm finding with my 350 dually, which obviously has the larger turning radius: the problem is not how tight you can turn the wheels but rather obstacles around you. Trying to make a 90-degree turn out of a driveway with vehicles parallel parked on the street is impossible regardless of turning circle. You need to pull out far enough to clear the big dually butt and by then you're on the curb already.
Certainly there are times the 450 is going to shine, especially when trailering...but size is kind of the limiting factor. I'm not finding myself wishing my truck could turn sharper...rather that it was skinnier and shorter! However, I think this truck is making me a better driver; always a good thing.
By the way, the trailer blind spot monitoring is awesome. My bigger equipment trailer squeaks under the 30' total length by a couple of feet, and it sure is nice to have that extra warning in your mirror. On the truck alone, the blind spot is a waste of money: the new, lower spotter mirrors are much better than the previous version and there really are no blind spots. Cross traffic alert is useful, though.
Thanks for all the comments. Not super thrilled with a DRW, but afraid I will run out of payload pretty quick with the SRW. Even though the Spec's say 4400lbs payload, I'm not sure the reality will be close to that.
We would be towing on camping trips throughout the year. While the truck won't be a daily driver, it will be my primary vehicle.
Would I lose much with going with an F450 over a F350 as far as drivability and mileage on a daily basis?
As far as going Ford over GM - I am really impressed with what Ford has done with the new trucks. Everything for me just seems to click with the interior and features. Not sure GM will be catching up anytime soon. Was disappointed GM didn't do anything more than just the new motor. Even a small thing like adding the 1500 headlights to the HD trucks didn't happen.
Sounds like you weren't a diehard gm guy, but still, it takes something pretty big to happen to get a guy to switch brands. My boss is a big GM guy, most of our company trucks are GMC's or Chevy's, with the exception of the heavy duty trucks, we have a lot of F450/550's (bucket trucks, toolbed trucks, and trucks that pull heavy drills). He always has a Denali pick up. They are nice, but that style is old and boring now. Like you, I can't believe they are only adding a hood Scoop. Even the most loyal GM guy has to be scratching his head. But I'm sure GM will come up with something, and I'm sure their new Duramax will perform well.

I don't think the GM style is "old" now, I mean come on, it only appeared as a 2014 model. Ford kept the style exactly the same 2011-2016...with "just" an engine update in between. We didn't even get a hood scoop! Fortunately, the 2011-2016 had excellent styling that ages well.

You cannot go off of the posted payload because you will have options added to your particular vehicle that will add weight and decrease your payload capacity. You also will have to take into account the tires you are running so the only way to know for sure is to look at the sticker in the door panel and then you will know.
Just my 2cents
I have had 3 drw trucks tow all sorts of trailers my current truck 2011 f350 drw 3.73 and cyclone 4000 elite (20,000lbs with side by side in back and full gear) will downshift to 3rd gear on some of the hills around my area. So when it was said that the 17 would have more torque I figured I would be ok just ordering another 350 with 3.73 gears then the order form came out and 3.55 or 4.10 I was not going to go down on the gearing so almost ordered the 4.10. My dealer made a good point that 4.10 gears with 31.4" tall tires and a f450 with 4.30 gears and 32" tall tires make it pretty close to the same so now for me it was wide track or not. Dealer had a 2016 f450 on the lot and said go try it I have been driving duallies since 2008 and thought I was a good driver and wide track would not be very noticeable boy oh boy was I wrong.
2017 f 450 platinum was ordered as soon as I got back from that test drive
