ATF has never been recommended for the MTX 75 transmission. Your 90 2.9 Ranger almost certainly had a Mitsubishi transmission which was also never supposed to have ATF. No wonder they both shifted better with gear oil than the ATF they weren't supposed to have.

You know what came out of them. You have no idea what was supposed to be in them, because the Mitsubishi transmission never called for ATF in the first place. If it had it, some prior owner or shop had put it in by mistake. If you misread your owners manual or it was unclear, that isn't something which I can answer for.

If you use Gear lube in a Mazda M50D r1 tranny you will destroy it in short order. The lube passages for the input bearing were designed for ATF fluid and not the thicker gear lube. Also a thicker gear lube will result in poor shifting when cold. Hard shifts and grinding plus extremely poor gas milage due to resistance in the tranny.
