I have a '91 Exploder that I keep having problems with. At about 15,000 to 20,000 intervals the transmission starts slipping to the point of having to manually shift it. After changing the filter and fluid it seems to clear up somewhat. It also registers no fluid on the dipstick when the slipping starts and as soon as you add any amount of fluid, it shows it to be overfilled. Can ANYONE tell me what might be going on with this thing and what I can do to fix it????
Are you adding the fluid with the engine running and also are you checking the fluid level with the engine running. Both are a must as the fluid is pumped thru the tranny.
Yeah bcuz the tranny fliud will expand when the tranny is warm. The perfect time to check the tranny fliud is about you drive 20-25 miles. If you check it when its not running or if its cold, it will give you an inaccurate reading.
I have been checking the fluid and/or adding fluid with the truck running and after it has been warmed up to normal temperature. After checking my records, I realized that it has been at about 12,000 mile intervals. The transmission that is in the truck now only has about 45,000 miles on it. A Ford dealer here in central Florida had R&Red it in May of 2000 (previous and original owner had it done, I have original paperwork though). It seems to be slipping pretty good now when taking off from a dead stop now, especially when it's cold.
Has the computer been checked? Most transmissions are computer controlled these days. Are you leaking fluid at all, around the trans cooler near the radiator or around the transmission? If not...
I wonder if the torque converter is empty/low. Have someone move the shift lever from drive to reverse(over and over again) with their foot on the brake with the engine running, while you add fluid. Sometimes it can take a couple of days of driving to get the fluid level correct.
It has been put on a scanner and does show a problem that was pre-existing, nothing to do with the one I am currently having. It has not leaked one drop of fluid (previous s-10 owner with the cruddy tranny... i.e.... i check relentlessly). The fluid never smells burnt and appears to be relatively clean. I had changed the fluid last week and did notice that the magnet in the bottom of the pan had a considerable amount of 'sludge' on at that I had never seen before in any transmission pan. Have done the shifting back and forth between gears and it seems to have no affect on it.
