Gasoline White Paper
I was first introduced to "gasohol" back in the early 80s at the local mom-and-pop gas station. I was driving a high-miled '71 Impala with a big block at the time. The owner of the station told me that I would probably be replacing a couple of fuel filters right after I started to use the ethanol blend. I didn't believe him because I had a large fuel filter installed between the tank and the mechanical fuel pump, but sure enough, it plugged up a filter or two before all was well. That happened to just about everybody who started to use the stuff in an older vehicle with high miles.
My buddy and I also experimented with raising the octane by mixing some gasohol (now called E10) and leaded gas of the same octane. I believe the gasohol was an 89 octane (at the time) and the station also sold some 89 octane premium that was still leaded. By mixing the two, the lead from the premium gas would give a slight octane boost to the gasohol-based unleaded gasoline. At least my buddy's '71 Torino with the Cleveland loved the mix. That Torino had a top end that was scary. Yes, I was young and stupid.
