Re,
It's not bad at all. Get a screw driver and, from the inside, start to push the rubber lip around the metal edge. Work your way around. Start in the middle on top and work your way around the corner and half way down on both sides. After that is done, push on the wind shield with both hands evenly. Make sure you've got someone to catch it.
It goes in a bit differently. Place the rubber seal around the new windshield. Wrap a insulated wire around the groove twice. The loose ends should be together at the bottom of the windshield. Set the rubber groove in the bottom of framed opening. Push in on the windshield at all times (pretty hard). Start to slowly(carefully) pull the wire out of the groove. This should pull the rubber lip over the metal frame lip. Oh yeah, lube the whole thing up with dish detergent. It makes it much easier. If you miss a section, stop!, and pull the small section out with a screwdriver or a dull instrument.
Good luck,
KingFisher
Everything dfisher said except use silicone spray to lube the windshield rubber with instead of dish detergent. Dish detergent will dry out long before the job is done. You also need to lube the channel of the rubber where the windshiled sets in it too. This allows for everything to move without binding and prevent excessive pressure on the glass when trying to get the windshield to seat completely into the opening. The windshield needs to go in evenly as possible and not one end and then the other. Twisting the windshield almost always results in breaking it. Work it in evenly with small increments.
But will lubing the rubber channel for the windshield cause problems later? I mean silicone lube will never dry out. Or is the fit that tight that I shouldn't worry about it?
It is not a problem. It is the way a glass shop installs them. I should know since I worked with my dad who is a 40 year experienced installer of auto glass.
What kind of silicone spray did you use Dfisher? I have never seen anything like what you describe about it being messy when the spray silicone lube is used.
All,
The silicone i used came out of a tube. Like a calk gun! It got all over everything and then it hardened. I guess i never had to worry about that windshield leaking.

Silicone works, but is so messy. It gets all over everthing and is difficult to clean up. I've always used dish detergent.

Just hope the paint job is done, silicone is a auto painters nightmare when is comes time for a repaint.
