4x4 issues
okay, anyway...
I've tried "using the search function" and I came up with this:
https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/9...97-2003-a.html
and that still did not resolve my issue
So, here's whats happening 1998 F-150 180k miles with a switch to engage 4wd.
When I toggle the switch to 4hi it engages; the front drive shaft rotates and you can hear the diff making some noise. I've checked under the truck and the actuator does actuate and the shift fork moves smoothly.
With the truck on jackstands the left front wheel will catch the diff when i try to rotate it and you can see the drift shaft turn with it.
The right front wheel doesnt do anything except free spin
To answer the question of does 4 low work, im not sure. Normally when switching between hi and lo nothing happens but one time only I saw a dash light that said "low range" and the diff was even louder so, I'm guessing low worked but only that one time.
The truck has a vacuum leak somewhere because it has the classic problem of the a/c coming out of the defrost vents under throttle. However, i don't think its related to this issue because like i said, the actuator does its job.
I feel like maybe the splines on the right side axle are rounded off but im not sure!
if anyone has any ideas i'd apperecaite some insight. I've only had the truck for a few months so i'm still new to the platform
-Thanks, Bill
The passenger side is always engaged with the carrier.
The fork may be broken or not engaging the sliding collar on the driver side CV axle.
If that is the case, the 4H and 4L will come on even if there is a problem with the axle mechanical engagement, because the electrical part of the system is not able to tell there is a mechanical problem, at that location.
Good luck.
