Hello all,
I have a 1992 ford explorer, I bought it about 5 months ago. I have been trying to fix all the problems that have come up with it since then, new motor, new sensors, fuel pump, etc. Another issue has popped up this week with it. The 4x4 on it has never worked, and I have never really tried to mess with it all too much considering all the other issues I have had with the truck. I noticed tonight while I was driving the 4x4 light came on. The truck didn't drive any different. I pulled into a gas station and turned it off, and restarted it. I was thinking that it might be a fluke that it just popped on. When I turned the truck back the light came on and stayed on. I might be interested in fixing the 4x4 on this truck. Am I damaging something on the truck drving it this way, its not in 4x4, it's just saying it is, also what do I need to test in order to fix this issue? I am sorry about the brokeness of the message, it's just pretty late at night right now. I appreciate any responses, you guys and gals are great. I am pretty much at wits end with this thing. Thanks for your time!
Hey again guys,
I really would appreciate any suggestions you guys have. I really love this truck but it's starting to be a bit of a money pit. Please respond:-)
Try jacking up all 4 wheels and see if it might be in 4 wheel drive. The transfer case can be driving the front shaft without turning the wheels if the vacuum line to the front axle is not connected. When it goes in 4 wheel drive, a solenoid activates vacuum to a solenoid on the axle which engages the front axle. I had a Blazer that was stuck in 4 High so I disconnected the vacuum line so it wouldn't drive the front axle. The transfer case made a lot of noise on the highway, but I never had any trouble with it. Otherwise, one of the sensors or electric motors for the push button system has gone haywire and it thinks it is in 4 wheel when it's not. I personally do not like the push button Ford systems and have never put my 92 in 4 wheel simply because it has probably never been engaged and I don't want it to get stuck in gear. 4 wheel problems = big $$$$ so be ready to spend if you want to fix it...
I don't think the front axle is vacuum engaged on the '92; at least mine isn't. The auto hubs on the 1st generation Explorers are engaged whenever the front axle spins. When I had auto hubs, I'd check them by crawling under the truck and turning the front driveshaft until they engaged, usually 1/4 to 1/2 turn. I would be inclined to think that there is a problem with the sensor or circuit that indicates when it's in 4HI.
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 14-Jul-02 AT 08:55 PM (EST)]I think I may have a similar problem. I have a 95 that was working fine and now both the 4x4 AUTO and 4x4 LOW lights keep blinking on the dash. I can't engage the 4x4 now and nothing works, but I think it's still in 2wd.
