I have a 2004 SD F250 PS. Nice truck Lariat trim, supercab shortbox. Has 93000 miles is 4x4 auto trans. When it runs good it is a beast. we have a slide in camper that we use for vacation and have traveled the west US. every trip we have taken it has had an episode of surging and bucking, sometimes having a dead throttle pedal. I have had it to a good diesel mechanic, usually no codes but he has tinkered with it and it runs great after his work - for a while. I just bought a 1996 F250 basically the same truck only older but it has a 5.8 and a long box with 112000 mi. We plan to go to Alaska next year and I want to have a truck I feel confident driving. This is just a matter of opinion. What do you say?
My father-in-law had a 2004 6.0 PSD F250, he wound up having a lot of problems with it and getting rid of it. I don't know if yours is a 6.0, but I think some of those had some pain-in-the-rear EGR problems, and I think that's what his problem was.
6.0L trucks needed EGR delete or at least an upgraded EGR cooler, head studs, clean air & fuel (as do all diesels), stock tune and they were more reliable. But they're still under built with just 4 head bolts per cylinder, and I recall plenty of odd problems when my dad was working for Ford on the reaquired vehicle program (aka lemons or buybacks) during the early 6.0L fiasco. He drove a different 6.0L home at a minimum once a week to road test after major repairs (then the trucks were auctioned off to recoup some of the massive loses Ford incurred by buying back hundreds of Super Duties).
Just be aware a 6.0L will blow the doors off a stock 5.8L. So, be patient.
yes it is a 6.0. I think my present problems are with the EGR system. I took it to a dealer today, considering trading for a new Escape. They offered me $5500 for trade value. OUCH! Hoping I didn't have to take that much of a cut. Not sure what to do, it was running like crap when the salesman took it for a spin.
As far as power goes, I realize I am taking a huge HP cut but I am getting to be an old fart and don't drive fast anymore!
Sorry for your 6.0L trouble. They can be corrected (bulletproofed) but it isn't cheap, and no guarantees. They are nice trucks to drive, but they are not known as reliable.
How big/heavy is your camper? A 7.5L Ford may serve you better than a 5.8L. A heavily worked small block doesn't do any better than a 460 big block on fuel when the 460 is just chugging along in its torque band and the small block is screaming at 3500rpm against a head wind or big pass. Just something to think about. I'd also caution you to watch for rust. I'd look for a truck out west, they don't salt our roads like they do in Iowa. A "clean" OBS in the midwest is a rotted pig out here.
Keep the camper weight and the truck GVWR in mind too. I was asking about F-250 / F-350 GVWRs for carrying a slide-in camper in this thread. To be legal you are really limited to about a 1500 - 2000 lb camper (and at the low end of that unless it's a regular cab F-350). I don't like the newer trucks, but they do have their advantages, and payload is one of them.
