Manual Hub Problem

About a year ago I swapped my auto hubs to manual hubs (1989 F150 with Dana 44). I installed Warn premium hubs. Since this swap the front axle makes a grinding noise when engaged under load. What I discovered upon disassembly of the hubs and spindles is that the axle stub shaft splines are contacting the inside diameter of the spindle at the end. The auto hubs use a splined washer and a "c" clip to locate the shaft, the manuals do not. I tried to install the washer and "c" clip with the manual hubs but there is not enough clearance.
Anyone seen this before?
