Good evening all. I was in the process of removing my steering gear box and all was going well until I hit the last frame bolt holding the box on. It backed out a bit and then stopped. I was using an impact wrench. I tried tightening it back in and then back out but it will not budge either way. I tried putting the other 2 bolts back in and trying, but got nothing. It is the bolt furthest to the right or closest to the steering wheel/cab. Any help would be much appreciated as I am without a vehicle now.
It backed out probably about 1/2 inch. Now it will not tighten or loosen. And I tightened up the 2 bolts I had removed and tried to loosen the problem bolt...no joy.
Hahaha I was doing it all in the pouring rain and was pretty frustrated. I'm going back at it tomorrow after work and will try pulling it out, then a breaker bar and then a tad bit of heat. If all else fails I will cut it and buy 3 new bolts from Ford.
Did it loosen the half inch and then stop spinning? Like it's seized? Or is it just spinning in place? If it backed out a half inch I'd guess you should be able to pry it out. I had to really wriggle one of mine to get it out when I replaced my steering box.
Hmm...maybe take out the other two bolts and see if you can get the box to move. Something sounds weird.
And I'd say a breaker bar isn't a bad idea if you find the bolt is seized in the box. If you're replacing the steering box shearing off the bolt doesn't matter. If you're trying to reuse the box it is, though
Where in VA are you? If youre close to Ashburn, VA and you're still working on it when I get off work tomorrow (around 3:30) I could try to stop by and help.
tfunk im in Williamsburg, almost 3 hours away. I'll be getting home from work at 3:30 and going at it again. It doesn't surprise me when things don't go as planned working on my truck. But I am always amazed at the willingness and help from this great group of guys on FTE! I will update as soon as I come to a conclusion.
