Recently found out the hard way that pickup tube has separated from fuel pump in tank. My 2004 F-250 quit running and I was told that this happens a lot with the pickup tube. I put additional fuel in tank and have tried to start but It won't fire up. I have cycled the key on and off several times. Any suggestions on what to do next.
First, your fuel pump is not in tank. It's on the frame under drivers side door. Second, take fuel filter out of you secondary filter on top of engine and see if you are getting any fuel there. You do have a sending unit on your tank for the fuel gauge, but I've never heard of them separating. Not saying it don't happen.
I was told by dealer that pickup tube probably fell off of end of pump is what I was going on. They filled with fuel and cranked the truck after towing to dealership. Service writer told me to replace by pulling the bed to get to tank or just keep full of fuel. I didn't keep it full enough. What can I do if I am not getting fuel to the secondary filter. I pulled the top off and turned on the key and I am not getting an overflow of fuel. I can hear pump hum for about 60 seconds and then it stops. Any help would be appreciated.
Just purchased a new 2016 F250 Lariat FX4 last week. My 2004 F-250, the one having problems, only has 100K miles on it. Hope to keep it for another 12 years.
Only other option I know of is drop the tank. Some say it's easier to pull the bed, some say it's easier to drop the tank. The less fuel the better if dropping tank.
