Engine knock. Please help!!

When we startup the van, It knocks in the pattern of a diesel engine running. The knock goes away when we drive for awhile and does not return unless we leave it for an hour or so.

This has been going on since November of 2002.

Is it a connecting rod bearing or a noisy lifter?? You can hear it loud and clear for a while.

What should I do?? Please help!!

Thanks again!!

Engine knock. Please help!!

What's the oil pressure like? Also what engine is it? I believe that the 4.0 l has been known to build up carbon in the combustion chamber that will cause a knock cold and go away when the engine gets up to temp. There are chemcials that you can use to decarbon the engine, and the Motorcraft one that Ford markets is supposed to be one of the best. If my memory serves me correctly Ford published a service bulletin that covered the procedure on how to do this. I used to just fog water into the carb while the engine was idling (up to temp of course) and that worked. Its a bit different with a fuel injected engine but fogging water into the throttle body should work. Just be careful to not put to much liquid in all at once or you could hydralic lock a piston and that's very bad!
