Gear Ratio Change

I have a 2016 F250 6.2L with 3.73 rear end gears. I could not find one on the lot with 4.30 gears at all , but I did find a truck with the 5th wheel prep package .

I called a buddy that has the dial indicators & other tools needed to properly setup the gear change but he asked if it would require a calibration change so the transmission will still shift correctly. I know the speedo is driven from the wheel speed sensors so it will not be effected but wanted to see if anyone has any experience with gear changes in a 2016 and if it involves anything more than just changing the gears out? I will be using official Ford gears as to minimize the chance of gear whine.

I am pulling a large 5th wheel & feel that it would be better on the truck to have the 4.30's.

Thanks for any input

Take this with a disclaimer but I think from what I have read here you don't have to do anything but change the hard parts. (I think)

Thanks, I am hoping you are correct, I think I'm going to order the gears and give it a go.

On previous year models all you had to do was change the gears out, we'll find out soon on this one......

yes, I've been researching this myself. No other computer inputs are required.

It will be the best mod possible. Enjoy. The tranny will shift based on rpm and throttle. No different than when guys go from the little 31" tires to some 35", which would be going from a 4.30 to a 3.73.

Gearing is everything. I've been hauling a extra horse lately and damn I've been wishing for some deeper gears.

Too bad you already bought your truck. When I ordered mine, I specifically ordered it with the 4.30 rear end. While doing my research, I found one dealer, Ziems Ford Corners in Farmington, New Mexico, that orders all of their 6.2 gas trucks with the 4.30 rear ends. I was going to maybe buy my truck from them as they had one on the lot that was almost just what I wanted but my dealer gave me a great deal so I just ordered exactly what I wanted from them.
Below is an example of the 2016 they have on the lot as of today with the 4.30's.

Thanks for the vote of confidence guy's.

And yes WyoBull, I bought my truck a few weeks ago. Unfortunately here in Texas dealers act like 4.30's are criminal. I actually got into an argument on the showroom floor with a dealer employee that actually told me I was "stupid and don't know what I really need". In those words.

I didn't buy from there by the way.

What a joke. They probably drive a car, and know nothing about 6.2's other than it's not the powerstroke.
Most dealer workers have no idea that a stock xl 3.73 and a stock lariat w/20" wheels and 4.30 net nearly the same hwy rpm's.(100 more in 4.30's). Glad you got your new truck.

its to BAD, you did NOT do your research Before buying the New Truck.

just because a friend has the tools.. does not mean he has done many properly.

my opinion.

Ok......before we start slinging mud here let me fill you in......

I am a Ford tech of more than 15 years, I just haven't changed ratio on a 2016 yet and wanted to ask if anyone has had any issues with doing so mostly because the guy that I worked next to for almost 10 years (that is the driveline wizard for that particular dealer) asked me if I was sure I would not run into calibration problems due to the way the software is being written now and the fact that many programmable parameters have been removed from the IDS in recent history. I am fully capable of doing this job, however I just bought a $60k King Ranch and want the rear end perfect after the swap. I would rather pay him a few dollars and know it will be quiet the first time because he still works there and has all the shims and tools required. I had to hang up my wrenches when my back took a dump on me (required surgery) so I am limited in what I can do myself now. My wife watches me like a hawk now to make sure I don't over do it.

I have personally helped him with and he has helped me with more rear end overhauls than I could ever remember on all size trucks from Explorer's to F550's.

It is my personal experience as a Ford diesel Tech that caused me to be so dead set against buying a newer diesel engine. I consider buying a 6.0L but decided I wanted a new truck instead. So I bought a gas rig. I just wish they still put the 6.8L in a 250/350.

So what other research did I need to do? I wanted and tried to find a 6.2L with 4.30's, 5th wheel prep kit, and at least a Lariat (finally decided on a King Ranch because I didn't care for the Platinum and I love the King Ranch seats). The only thing I couldn't find was the 4.30's anywhere near Texas, but that's an easy fix. My price for 2 Ford gear sets will be $725 tax and all, already ordered. The dealer I got it from went all the way to Kansas to get my truck for me.

BTW: these are facts & not opinions

LoL, I know the feeling about picking up after someone, it always amazed me when people would come in requesting a part be replaced then get mad when it didn't fix anything saying "well that's what Autozone said it needed" LMAO

I changed my 2011 f350 KR from 3.73 to 4.30. I found to me that it made a big difference and am still really enjoying it. Nothing else was needed just the gear swap and drove away a happy camper.
