Looks like we will be finally getting around to assembling our 52 8ba flathead for a 50 F-1.The original engine was red ,but the one we are using is green. I've been looking for the proper green paint. I see Eastwood has a green that is suppose to match. Has anyone used there paint? Or is there a better alternative out there?
The only green engine paint I see on Eastwood's site is for the older (30's-40's) Fords (see below). The Detroit Alpine Green is a bit lighter/brighter than what Ford used, but close. Bill Hirsch (Auto Restoration Supplies for Classic Cars, Antique Cars, Exotic Cars - HirschAuto.com) is supposed to sell "exact match" paint, $$$, but I'm not seeing it.
This is 1952 Bill Hirsch light green. This is Mark Mossell's V8, I used it on my 215 as well. It's about $16 per rattle can, so, yeah, expensive, but it's really nice paint. It's also said that Krylon #2007 is a close match, as is Detroit Diesel Alpine Green. Stu
We got the engine we are rebuilding from the Father in Laws in a old truck trailer. The engine has the 8BA heads not the 8RT heads that was in the truck. The [original] engine that was in the truck was painted the alpine green. The one we are rebuilding has the dark green color.I guess we could pull the heads of the RT engine and put them on the BA engine. I kinda want to keep that engine intact for another time. Did some of the 52 cars use the dark green?

I don't know if the '52 and '53 were the same color green. The picture on the left is my engine painted with the Krylon. You can see remnants of the original color on the bell housing in the picture on the right. The bolt head is painted with the Krylon.
The Bill Hirsch looks closer to me. The Krylon is a little too blue.
Note: I should add the green on the bell housing is from a '53.

Reason: Added note
This is my bellhousing with remnants of stock paint.
As far as heads, the 8BA heads are superior to the 8RT heads, marginally better compression ratio, better flow. Not that you'd really notice on a stock truck. Whatever you use, make sure they aren't cracked. You can also gauge how much they've been milled by looking at the underside, near the thermostat housing. As more and more gets milled to make them flat, the head gasket surface gets closer and closer to the thermostat housing, eventually cutting into it. Best not to mix a heavily shaved head with one that isn't.
Thank's everyone for the input. I guess we will have think about how close we want to keep it to original. I would think it would take a couple of coats to cover the darker green. Nice to know about the heads. The machinist should be done next week with all the engine work.I will look to see how much was taken off the heads.
Getting ready to paint my block and heads prior to assembly on 8BA. I'm going with the Bill Hirsch Lincoln Mercury light green. Trying to figure out how many can's I'll need. I was thinking 2 just in case but that seems like a lot of paint, No?
Torn between brush vs spray can. Brushing seems better since i don't have a paint booth and can avoid overspray (small garage) but i want a nice finish so maybe i'll make a booth with one of those portable closets things.
