Hello everyone, recently I just received (what I think is) a 1977 Ford F150. I got it from a farmer who said it was a 77 and that's what I have thought but the I.D. tag on the door says 1979. I know that the 79's had a different grill and headlight style than the '77's but I know that swaps can be done to change that. I really want to be %100 sure on the year before I start messing with it. Sorry if this is a really dumb question but I am very new to these trucks and could use all the help I can get. Any help is appreciated. Thanks!
Looks like a '77. The grill is 76-77 and the cowl mounted badges are 77-up so that narrows it to a 77.
Probably the door was changed.
What does the title say? Is the VIN on the title the same as on the door?
Best to check the frame VIN, in most states thats the "legal" VIN and the one you have to go by.
EDIT: Doubt that's the original door. The "DR" body code means Ranger XLT or Lariat model with a jade interior. And the "B" paint code is for dark jade metallic.
The only number that matters is stamped into the frame. Many years back, when I moved my first 79 into Arizona, the Port of Entry required the VIN from the frame stamp. Up until that time, I didn't know there was one!
Seems to me it was on the drivers side frame rail, although I've read a bunch of posts recently that say right side. The numbers at the back of the VIN will determine year

The frame VIN is stamped in two places on the frame. Both on the top of the rail, passenger side. The visible VIN is in the engine compartment, between the firewall and radiator support. The hidden VIN under the cab, usually about 10-12" behind the front cab mount.

Thanks Mike! Gives me something to do when I run out of projects!

On the four wheel drive, the VIN should be stamped on the right side (Passengers side), on top of the frame rail, between the alternator, and front axle area.
I went through this just about a year ago, trying to get Ka'Bluey registered here in North Carolina. You can probably clean that area up well enough to see the Vin, with sand paper. Unless you have a small grinder/drill with a wire wheel on it.
