Trailer Brake Controller

Just checking with those who tow travel trailers, which brand is the best brake controller for the Excursion? Plug and play?

Another vote for the Prodigy P3 especially if you are towing heavy.

The 3/4 ton and 00 X both have Tekonsha. The 3/4 ton has had it since 2001, works great still. In 01 recall that one being one of the best on the market.

The 1 ton and 02 X both the P2 Prodigy and it's superior over the Tekonsha.

Another Tekonsha P3 user here, get it with the Ford patch cable for real plug and play hookup. I have had mine for 6+ years now and over 30,000 towing miles without any issues at all.

Now I'm confused. I see nowhere on the Tekonsha site where they call it a Prodigy P3(which I believe I heard on this site)... just a P3 and a P2....They have a Prodigy model, but it seems very basic, more basic than my Voyager....

Tekonsha P3

I recently purchased a Big Tex 14TL-20BK tilt equipment trailer and needed a brake controller.

After doing some research I found that most people really liked the Tekonsha P3. I purchased one from Amazon. It is plug and play as long as you also buy the correct wiring harness. For my Ex it is the 3035P harness.

I have used mine a little and it is great. A friend of mine also has one for his 06 F150 4x4 when he tows his cattle trailer and it works perfectly as well.

Another vote for the P3 here. I have literally traveled all over the country pulling the 13k lbs trailer and I love it.

They used to. It's even on their documentation:

I just checked out the Tekonsha web page and it looks like they still do call the Prodigy P2 the same name, but apparently for the newer P3 version Tekonsha dropped the "Prodigy" part. Us people (you know, Joe Public) probably got so used to calling it the Prodigy P2 that when the P3 came out, we just kep using the designation "Prodigy" even though Tekonsha dropped "Prodigy" from the P3 label.

When that happens in the musician's world, it's usually because some obscure product had the rights to the original name, and rather than hassle it, they either change or drop the offending name....
