After buying dye to tell exactly where my 97--7.3-PSD is leaking oil from I have found out that it is leaking from the front cover of my motor not a easy job but with the $$$$$ that even the international shop has given me I have got to do this myself so My question is that several mechanics have told me that they are not sure if you can just lift the motor up to the turbo on the firewall and remove the front part of the oilpan to drop the pick up tube before pulling the front cover. I take myself as a pretty decent mechanic and in the three books that i have over this motor -none of them tell you that you have to pull the motor even !!! but only two mechanics say they have went this far into it --even the lead tech at the ford house here hasnt done this and doesnt have a clue either!!LOL so you see my delima thinkin maybe someone can help
I have not done a front cover in our chassis before, just on the IH chassis. I think your chances will be better on a 2wd v/s a 4X4. Worse case senario, you loosen the turbo and move it to the side and get a little more room, or remove it. Either way it takes about 1/2-3/4 hour.
Anything to really be watching for when I go to lift it up besides this? Since the high pressure oil pump(HPOP) is gear driven does it need to be timed when i go to put it back together? Thanks for all the help guys going to tear into it tomorrow --309,000 and shes never had oil leak like this
