i just broke another front 60 need ideas on a stronger front end. maybe a earlier pre 99 super duty or even rockwells. i got 39" michelins and run real hard .aany help is appretiated
What exactly did you break?
shaft? knuckle? hub? u-joint? r&p?
Also what year truck?
You said you might need an earlier 60 so I take it you have a '99 or later so its possible (unless you have a dually or 03 model) you have a dana 50 and not the 60. If thats the case I saw an article not too long ago in Pet. 4wheel and O/R that showed a kit dynatrac makes that upgrades the dana 50 to make it as strong and maybe stronger than a dana 60.
It replaces tie rod, drag link, knuckles, stub shafts, hubs, bearings, panhard bar, and probably some other stuff I forgot. Not sure how much $$$
EDIT:
I was just looking around, here is the website for that D60 upgrade: http://www.dynatrac.com/html/super_duty_combo_kit.htm
Price: ~3,000$
I really think you should be fine with an upgraded D60, Rockwells would probably be overkill but if you suscribe to that go big or go home theory then go for it. (I usually do but a D60 is pretty big by my standards)

i've broken one housing and snapped off a knuckle off the tube on the passenger side. i run 4.56 with detroits both ends and 39" michelin xml's. my problems always seem to happen after the phrase "hey guys watch this"
OK disregard my previous post, if you've broken a housing then there's not much I know of to help that other than reinforcing the poop out of it.
What were you doing when all this occured if you don't mind me asking and what engine are you running/mods? This sounds pretty extreme.
I haven't seen anybody put rockwells under a new super duty but I have seen somebody put 2 ton GM axles under a 96 or 97? F350. The reason he went with these instead of the rockwells is because he could get a much more usefull gear ratio (4.88 I think) where as the rockwells are limited to 6.72 which would kill you on the freeway.
here's the website for his truck: http://hometown.aol.com/jzettel73/Swamp_Donkey.html
You are looking aftermarket now like a Dynatrac or Tera housing with thicker axle tubes and aftermarket knuckle components. Also if all you break is shafts(which is what most people break) you can do a 35 splin upgrade. 39" tires are not that big anymore so you shouldn't be doing the housing damage you are stating unless you are jumping the truck. Try some trussing or something.
Also Wagoner Machine Shop can build you an axle with a 14 bolt center section and Dana 60 outers!
All it takes it $$$
If you are looking for a relatively cheap solution... 2.5 ton Rockwells!
ive got a 95 f250 witha modified e4od\np 205 case behind a savage 408 all aluminum windser with a dyno'd 525 hp . i whell like a lunatic in the mud 'cause there is no cryin 'bout environmental impact. on the trails i try to follow the jeeps with varying effects. if i swap to rockwells i'll put in 4 whell steering and 48" michelin xml's
Its either the Dynatrac route or Rockwells. It sounds to me like you need Rockwells, and it would be cheaper. Something tells me you'll eventually go bigger in tire anyways and even Dynatracs can't hang with big tires and stupid skinny pedal. Just go with the Rocks...
FWIW: The average selling price of a 2 1/2 ton 6x6 is $3500. If you buy one make sure you get a 478 and not the 428 motor.
If you are looking at axles, I would look at getting the whole truck if you are handy and can do the work yourself instead of ordering a $3000 axle. That way you get the rear axle free.
You can mount them any way you want. Although you could also narrow them yourself, I suspect you'd be better off getting them from a dealer already set up the way you want, rear steer and all. There are several dealers, but you can try www.boyceequipment.com to start yourself out. He can also answer any questions. There are also a dealer or two over at www.pirate4x4.com as many there have done this conversion.
Yea, go buy a used military 6x6. Extreme beef. Gears plenty low, stock. In my mind, forget narrowing. Just weld on the pads for the springs where you need them and bolt them on. Have the drive shafts modified to fit the axles, 205 should be fine. I have a axle off a F600 welded diff on my corolla. with dual 48's out back. www.geocities.com/worldrecord1/rides.html Anyways, If you break those, you can always move up to 5 tons. Then onto the axles on off road equipment. I am a operating engineer local627 and have ran some big crap. 6 wheel drive 40 ton Terex end dump with tires that are around 7' tall. Talk about fun. Hell just finished job with a 300 ton Link Belt crane setting the walls for a Home Depot. That damn thing would sink on dry rock hard ground, it does weigh around 300,000 pounds though. 6 axles 3 steering with singles and 3 rear with duals. YEEE HAAA!!!!!
No exaggeration, check my site for my yota, My local 627 is off Skelly Dr. that runs along I-44 in Tulsa, I am a apprentice, my card # is 2437612, the pres. name is Robert Luellen, Gerald Ellis is the Bus. Manager, and Bill Jones is the Financial Secretary. The # there is 1-918-437-0370. I don't lie. No need to I have also benched 500 in a sanctioned competition, I can prove that as well, at the World Association of Benchers and Deadlifters, www.wabdl.org/oklahoma_records.htm Look half way down the page, for Jarrod Fry. That was in my fatter days when I weighed around 305. I've since brought out the six pack because I got sick of being unattractive to the opposite sex. I've been shot in the stomach with a .38 special hollow point by a friend that was stupidly playing with his stores security, etc. etc. etc. I have led a very crazy and interesting(at least to me) life. So your, fifteen. You would be a sophmore ? Seems like yesterday (I'm 25) Sounds like you have a pretty sweet ride to turn to when you hit 16. I hope I have something that nice for my boy (2 years old) when he gets your age. Be careful and enjoy that truck, and I am sure you will as I did, but drinking and driving totaled my first corolla along with the 6 12", 4 6x9s, 2 6.5's, 2 5" mids, and 2 1" tweets. Pushing with 5 amps and a red dog light illuminating it at night. Hydraulics from a convertible raised and lowered the trunk lid, exposing 4 of the 12's flush mounted. No seat belt 45 mph, and leaving a private party from a club I worked at when I was 18. I had just drank a small bottle of Ice 101 and not to drunk, I was adjusting the eq when I realized I was driving in the ditch. Tried to turn out but hit a culvert for a driveway. I was only a half mile from where I was staying. When I shook it off My right tire was sitting beside me in the passenger seat. If there had been someone there they'd be dead. That is Tire, wheel, hub, brakes. Oh and I had a 10" chrome chain steering wheel. At 45mph to a dead stop, that friggin hurt. My face took out the windshield, and my elbows and knees the dash. Luck no DUI. My spouse has 3. And will be able to drive in Oct. 3 yrs. after the last dui. Anyways I quit my damn advice giving, I used to hate that crap. still do. OH. P.S. Unless your dieing, DON'T EVER LET THE DOCTORS GIVE YOU A CATHADER. That hurt 10X worse than getting shot. Better just cut it off and give it to them...
