My 65 4x4 with wrong bed has red reflectors above the tail lights. Was that a factory option or added by a customer later. I've seen others with them but many without.
I've seen a bunch of these trucks with the reflectors. Those without that I could get close enough to had the holes filled. You can tell by feeling and looking just inside of the back corner stake pockets. Here's one that has to be factory installed on my white truck. My red truck is the same story. My buddies blue truck and 4x4Alaska has them on at least one of his trucks.
Anyone have a clue as to what kind of aftermarket light/reflector some one put in this spot? I can understand the two small screw holes but not the large center one if they were just reflectors.
I have the same on my 66 F250 4x4. Funny you guys were going over this as I was working on my truck today and wondered the same thing as 4x4 AK...then I come in for the night and logged in to get my latest "schooling" on all things FTE, you guys answered my question! Right on! I bet NumberDummy and TA are both right...It depends on where these trucks were delivered...both TA's 4x4s were built in San Jose, as mine, and were delivered to WA, as was mine also... Didnt check where 4x4 AKs was built/delivered but I bet it was same as Chads and mine...would be interesting to see what others say, like from MT, the Midwest, etc...Im guessing that the reflectors were put on at the dealers, as NumberDummy said that he has only seen one done that way? Being he was in CA, a parts guru too, leads me to believe that they were put on at dealers... As always correct me if Im wrong, but seems that way anyway...
Read Chads link that showed the build number in crayon under the reflector on drivers side, so I went back out to my truck to see if I could spot my build number under my reflector on drivers side, but the screws were so rusted I couldnt get them to turn, so saturated them with WD 40 and will wait til tomorrow and give it another shot. I
did manage to remove the passengers side reflector, but no build number. It will be interesting to see if the drivers side reflector on mine has a crayon build number too...stay tuned... Passenger side rear reflector

John I would say someone attached a backup light. The large hole is for the wire to come through.

I respectfully disagree. I've been observing these reflectors for years and I've seen them on vehicles for sale on eBay that were built in Kansas City and Dallas to name two. Also, Washington state did not and still does not require any extra reflectors. A single taillight on both sides is not a problem to this day. I know two people that took off the reflectors very early on. One was my Grandfathers 1959 fridge and the other was my friends 1966.
The fact that I have more of them in my garage with the original reflectors installed than ND has ever seen at all tells me something. And, he's never paid any attention to them before. I have at least four of these in NOS boxes in storage so I've spent a little time observing.
Here's my red truck with the ROT number under the hood on the drivers side. Number 112 in this case. They did it in silver instead of black so it would show up better apparently. Black crayon on red wouldn't have been as easy to read.
And here is the ROT number under the drivers side reflector. Top of the dash bezel also has this number, but not the top of the gas tank.
Just to bring the pics of my white truck into the same thread here for comparison. The last two are top of the gas tank (how many times does this still exist?) and top of the instrument cluster bezel.
It could be these were only used in certain states, I'll not deny that, but these reflectors were often factory installed and were common.
We could just be having a difference in the terms we are using, too.
For example, I consider all the equipment on a Custom Cab to be standard equipment on that cab. It is optional on other cabs, but standard equipment on the Custom Cab. Or the Camper Special. Another load of equipment that I consider standard equipment on the Camper Special and mostly optional on other models. The ICC reflectors were optional equipment, except on the vehicles where it was standard equipment. Sorry if this viewpoint differs from others. I got the notation from the Light Truck Facts for Salesmen binder that I have from August 1965.
An example would be the cigar lighter. It is listed as Optional on Standard Cabs (Included w/Custom Cab). So I say it is standard equipment on the Custom Cab. Am I wrong?
I stand corrected. I was pretty tired the night I came in and replied to this post. In fact, I cant believe I didnt catch my own faux pas in the fact that indeed, in order for the reflector to have a crayon rot number underneath the reflector, it would most definitely have come factory installed. My bad. As always learn alot on this site from all of your oversight/insight! So, keeping on subject, I got the drivers side tail reflector off...and Voila! Theres the matching Rot number! Matches my instrument cluster Rot crayon number, the front cowl Rot number next to hood latch lock too! But alas, why do both my fenders Rot numbers not match? Whats interesting here Chad is that I think we had the same person writing the Rot numbers on the body...see the picks...one 6 should be a 9 and one 9 should be a 6? Writing upside down? Not sure but the main question is why do both my fenders not match the cab/cowl/rear fender under reflector? I doubt this trucks EVER had any replaced front fenders, but again I have been wrong here more times than I can count! School me guys!
