How do you know the heater core is bad?
If your truck has the deluxe fresh air heater with two cables mounted under the dash (to the right of the steering column) on a bracket, one of those cables controls the heater water valve.
The valve is notorious for leaking and/or getting rusted up internally.
I suggest you hook up the heater, then see what the problem is.
