How far retarded

I was checking my timing and when you press the gas down the engine automatically retards about 2 inches down, or about 30-40 degrees (guestimated). There was no gradual change just instantly there.

Is that too much retard, and should it be sudden like that? Thanks!

Clayton, what exactly are you doing? It shouldn't retard.

When you rev it up? I thought that the vacuum advance was supposed to retard the spark. I was just wondering if it was doing it's job right. I figured that it wouldn't move that much that soon.

Sounds like you have the vacuum advance hooked up to manifold vacuum.

Do you have a dual canister vacuum advance (one with two vacuum connections)? If so, the fitting closest to the distributor gets manifold vacuum (retard side) and the fitting out on the end gets ported vacuum (advance side).

I have a Holley n/dp. I thought that I hooked it up to the right spots. I'm using the vacuum on the passenger side near the front. Thanks. I'm going to double check.
