So, I've got a cracked (I think all the way through) Rear main leaf spring. It's a '79 F-100 2WD custom. I've got a line on some 3" springs from that era, but mine's got 2.5" springs. Is it a simple swap? It seems if I had the hangers with the springs I could grind off the rivets on my 2.5" hangers, smack off the bracket, bolt on the 3" hangers with Grade 8 hardware, and call it good? With new U bolts probably... Am I missing something, or is there an easier option?
I've done this. The 2.5" setup is exact same spring pad width as 3" when swapped out.
Funny though, all the spring brackets that attach to the frame were sorta randomly drilled. I've swapped quite a few out and the holes never match up great. Usually have to wallow one or 2 out. I always hold the exact same hole per side though and try to install a matching pair.
Not terrible of a swap. Basically what gittinwidit said, swap out the hangers and shackles and be on your way. The length of the 2.5" leaf springs are the same as the 3" wide and the mounting holes of the hangers don't always match up but make sure to position the hangers about the same spot as the old ones so you keep everything square on both sides.
If you need any 3" wide hangers, shackles, bolts or U-bolts feel free to send me a message. We basically have a bunch of stuff for that truck and we don't carry made in China parts.
