air conditioning

Question,
what causes an air conditioner to work fine when going down the hyw, but blows warm air when you are setting in traffic or idling?
I also noticed that my compressor makes allot of noise.

Obiously the compressor is wearing out and needs extra speed to make the cool air. Try to find a good working one at a junkyard.

You might want to check out the thread "is water pump replacement an easy job?" to find help as the A/C compressor is near the water pump.

If the compressor is OK, there is the possibility that the fan clutch is bad. When you are driving down the highway, enough air flows across the condenser that adequate heat is removed from the refrigerant without the fan. Also, make sure there are not a lot of bugs, leaves, etc. plugging up the condenser.

Go with Mikeman's suggestions - bad fan clutch. The noise is likely the result of high pressure buildup in the compressor due to restricted air flow.

Definitely a bad fan clutch. Just put a flex fan on mine for the same reason.
