Buying tires online

so I live in Canada and tires for my truck will Run $270 plus another $30 to install then then 13% tax so about $1356CND or about $975USD

So My question is... Is it worth it for me to get tires across the border.. and where?

I live reasonably close to Buffalo NY
Thanks

What tire brand size? NY is 12% tax I believe and your installation cost similar to US.

I just gave $340 a piece for 285/75/18 Toyo Open Country AT II's. My Cooper 285/75/16 Discoverer AT3's were $234 a piece last month. All 10 ply. Seems you're in the ballpark to me. Shipping, tax, duty and mounting and balancing those online tires will probably have you in the same ballpark anyway only without free rotating, balancing and warranty.

I am a little biased of course, but we would be glad to help you out. We have many customers that ship the product to a border store or location in NY, SD, MT. You would use NY obviously. Let me know what tire size you are looking for and I will see how we can help.
Some even get them installed while they are in the states and drive back over. Still have to pay for some costs for mounting/balancing.

Good point about driving over the border and getting them installed then going back. That I bet would save some money for sure.

Yep, I don't think you have to pay taxes on used items. So technically the tires would be.

I bought my Nitto Terra Grapplers from tirebuyer.com

They give discounts when buying tires that will be shipped to one of the intsallers listed on the website.

Buffalo has a bunch of installers the tires can be delivered to.

Questions, chat with tirebuyer sales on their website

I'd think with the current Exchange rate you would want to avoid buying them in USD.

Seems the Canadian $ is strongest against the Yen so I'd look for a Canadian retailer that imports a Japanees brand directly. Might want to look at a Chinese tire as well, exchange rate is not as favorable but they may still be less expensive due to labor/environmental issues,

tirebuyer is the like the Walmart of the tire world. They do have good deals, but are trying to run off all the middle size and smaller companies.
In regards to exchange rate, paying with a card or paypal will automatically convert the currency. In regards to build location, if imported or brought across the border you will pay more for items not built in the USA or Canada. There is a Free Trade Agreement, so they actually have lower taxes/duties when buying American product to bring into Canada and vice versa.

Converting to a diffrent currency is not the problem, like you say. Your CC company provides that service. It's the spending $1.30 Canadian to buy $1 USD that hurts. Your are loosing 30% just in the exchange.

Even with import duties, Overseas products are often less expensive because they cost less to produce.

Agreed, try and buy when the exchange rate is better. You are correct Chinese product is cheaper to buy. Depends on what brand you plan on buying, if it is actually a better move. If you wanted Toyo, they are a Japanese company, but have a bulk of the truck sized tires built in Georgia (USA) If you can save 16% on duties from buying a better tire from the US or Canada it closes the gap.

order from treadwright. They are remolded 10 ply load range e tires that look very similar to a bfg AT tire. I bought 4 for my excursion last year, and i only spent right at 500 USD for all 4. I have a buddy with a shop, so it only cost me a 12 pack of bud light to get them mounted. I still haven't balanced them, and I don't have any vibrations. A buddy of mine bought a set for his wifes SUV, and it got a bubble in the side wall. When he called them, they sent him another one at no cost no questions asked.

I don't work for them, and I'm not getting paid for writing this, i have just been very happy with the tires!
