Should I replace my timing gears?

I just bought a 1983 F150 with a 300 6. It has 60000 miles and was city/county owned since new. I'm trying to do all the preventative maintenance I can. Just curious if I should check to see if it has fiber timing gears?

Is there any specific brand /type that I should be looking for in replacements?

I think the fibre gears came in sometime during the 90s. Unless they are definitely broken you won't need the change the gears.

I personally wouldn't bother changing it unless you drive far from home regularly or plan on keeping it for a long time. Have a look on the forum to see how long they last, most of them last a while. I pulled mine at 110,000km for a cam change and no signs of wear were seen.

Changing that gear is a pain. You'll need to
-Buy a set of gears
-Pull off your bumper, grille, rad etc. (or pull the engine)
-Drain your coolant
-Pull your valve, timing gear and side cover
-Pull your distributor, fuel pump, rockers, pushrods and lifters
-Pull your cam
-Press your cam gears on and off
-Get a puller for the crank gear and press a new one on
-Reassemble everything above

The new steel ones may also whine or make some noise, but the will last forever if installed properly.

I believe the best set comes from Cloyes. The cam gear is aluminum, and the crank gear either steel or cast. Comp makes a set too, for about half the price, but I've heard the quality is shaky. "The good ones aren't stamped 'China'.

I have both a clifford set and comp set. Both of them never made noise and are some heavy. If the budget permits I'd go with the aluminum cloyes, but I'm sure the comp is also a decent choice.

Either way they're all better than the stock fiber gear anyway.

My understanding is that the gears are fiber in my son's 1984 as well as my 1986 [with 4.9L]. His has 235K miles and mine has 196K miles. Neither engine has required any internal work and both still run and sound quite healthy.
