So my father n law just picked up this 79! I haven't seen the truck yet in person and drool over yet. It's a 350 with a 460 in it and assumed it had a 400. What all info can I get from a #F36HNFE8509 vin? Can't you get where it was assembled, motor, etc? On my 79 I found out it has a 460 out of an early 70s Lincoln. I'll get the casting numbers off the motor to see what heads etc are in it
F36HNFE8509
F36=1979 F350 4WD pickup
H=351 cu in 2bbl V8 (a 400 would've been an "S")
N=Norfolk Assy. Plant
FE8509=1979 model year sequential serial number
The numbers off the heads are D00E-R, manifolds are D00E-9431-A and couldn't find the block casting but read it's by the starter. I'll have to look again. Are the heads any good. Thought the D0VE heads were the best. There was a web site that broke down blocks/heads etc numbers for a vague idea of what the motor came out of but can't remember what it was
Gorgeous truck! When you do get to see it in person would you mind posting the tire model and size for me? Also if there is any suspension lift or add-a-leaf in it.
It has that "tough guy" stance without being lifted to the moon. I dig it.
Seen it yesterday for the first time. It's incredibly clean but does need a little tlc mechanically. Tires are 315/75/16... Can't remember the brand.. Toyos I believe. My father n law was asking me about the suspension also and I was looking at it. Looks like an all new 3 leaf spring pack up front it has a drop pitman arm and the shock have those spacer things on the shafts to extend them. They look strung out. Which I need to measure them so he can get new ones
Perfect. Thanks for the info! Most info on here suggests a 77.5-79 needs a 4" lift to clear 35's... the 315's are pretty darn close to 35" and look good on there. I'm guessing that 3 leaf pack only has a couple inches of lift?? Looks like it should work fine if it's not flexin' like crazy.
That's a good looking truck you FIL has. And is one of my many dream trucks. However it does look to me like the truck has been redone. The dead give a ways are the lacking cowl name plates and hood letters. However it looks as though whoever did the work did a really nice job.
Keep in mind that a 350 4x4 stock still sits a couple of inches higher then a stock 250 low boy 4x4.
PA, could you elaborate? I've heard this, and I've also heard that the F250 and F350 have the same front spring packs... does a stock F350 have a 3 leaf pack? Or is it still a 2 leaf front spring but instead of a negative arch it is more "even"?
I have a 79 F350 4x4 chassis right now that the previous owner added a leaf to the front pack, making it a 3 leaf... Also looked at another 79 F350 that had a four leaf pack where it was very obvious that two leaves were Ford, and two of the leaves were clearly from farmer Joe.
Trying to figure out what I'll be looking at for ride height if I swap my body onto this chassis. If it comes out looking like BLK450's FIL truck, I'll be a happy camper!
Yes it was repainted..in 1989!! He has the receipt in the glove box. A $1700 painting job! Crazy. If he told me it was painted a few years ago I woulda believed him. Yes the hood and fender badges are one of the things he wants to do after the mechanical issues i.e. Leaks here and there etc. I think the dealership did a good buff job on it. There are 2 tiny bubbles on the whole truck. His tires are just under 34" tall. 33 3/4" to be exact. We did some measuring compared to mine lol. Kinda a funny story about our two trucks. Both 79 350s. I thought mine had a 429 in it per the previous owner come to find out it's a 460 and mine came from the factory blue and is now white. His he thought had a 460 in it looks to be a 429 and came from the factory white and is now blue lol
The tires makes his look taller than mine in the pics. They have so much side wall and fill up the fender gap more than my 33"s. Mine has an obvious add a leaf up front and my front sits 1" taller than his even though my tires are 2 1/4" shorter.. So I don't know what are trucks started at. Too many years of people wrenching on them to know for sure I guess! Lol

That's ironic and pretty cool! Did you ever confirm if they were in fact CJ heads on your FIL's truck? If it were me I'd be tempted to pull a valve cover and see if it has adjustable valvetrain, etc...
Having the truck painted a while ago is a good thing if you ask me... anyone can have a paintjob look good for a year, but in 10 years if it still looks good it shows that it was quality work and speaks for how well the rest of the truck was taken care of.
