Wiring harness

OK all have been working through my rebuild and thank you all for the help next step is the wiring harness I was looking at it closely last night and a bunch of the wires have been corroded due to engine oil leakage and a TON of it is unplugged which is worrisome but I do not see ports for the unplugged adaptors. So here's the question where would I get a good wring harness for the truck and how hard/much time is this going to take?

The truck is a 1986 F250 4x4 with the 300 I6 in it and a NP435 transmission

If you haven't already take a look at the electrical section on Gary's website, he has some good info there.

I see connections unplugged all over my engine bay and have cursed the PO, but I believe these harnesses were made "one size fits all" so some of that should be how it came from the factory dependent on your truck's options.

I've had luck in the junk yards before but it's tough for a 30 year old truck.

Which wiring gets used is dependent on which ignition system was installed - the computer-controlled variant has all sorts of sensors all over the engine, the DuraSpark II variant didn't use most of that stuff.

If you could post some pictures of your distributor, that might help us here....

There is no computer in mine its all old school with very few actual sensors. Would I be better off just buying a bunch of wiring and running the wires myself? I hate all those additional plugs hanging around. I will take some pictures and post soon as I get off work. Eventually I would like to bring this old girl back to show quality plus the occasional play toy.

Even non-computerized trucks had several empty connectors depending on the options. For instance, there's the underhood light, the trailer wiring, speed control, etc.

Making your own harness isn't easy if you want it to look stock. That's because the original connectors aren't easily found, nor are the terminals that go in them. But if you don't mind using generic connectors, like Weather Pack, then you can make your own and cover the wires themselves with convolute.

Having pulled apart a Canadian and 2 Aussie harness's to rebuild my 86 I can tell you it is a major headache. Gary's pages are an absolute must.
Ford have some pretty weird ideas when it comes to wiring.
Not wanting to start from scratch and changing from petrol to diesel meant a few changes needed to be made. Well a lot actually as I have changed to a simplified version and Aussie laws require different rear lighting.
Many days of fun!
Cheers Steve

Thanks for the plug.

But, you are right about Ford's wiring. It leaves a lot to be desired. I'm going to clean it up on Dad's truck in several ways.
