2004 supercrew 2wd, 5.4 - 3.73LS with 132k on it, just bought it 2wks ago and lately noticed a whining sound between approx. 20mph and 55mph, noise goes away when TC locks. I thought it was tire out of balance or low psi but that doesn't seem to be the problem. The noise isn't present when the truck is running in park, only at speed. I did some research this morning and keep coming back to the #9 Torrington bearing (output shaft) and thousands of dollars to repair. I'm praying that's not the issue with my truck.
If the noise goes away when the converter locks up I would suspect a bearing or something in the converter. If the only condition is the noise and there is minimal debris in the pan you may get away with just replacing the converter.
I'm leaning towards a pinion bearing myself, my FIL and I looked at the truck last night and the whine is coming from the bed area of the truck not underneath the dash/cab area. We also noticed the passenger side rear wheel seal is leaking and after a 25min drive the differential is very hot to the touch. When the axle is put in a bind like turning in a parking lot at slow speeds the axle also makes a popping sound. This truck has a LS slip rear end so I'm also wondering if something with that has messed up? I'm no mechanic so I'm just covering my bases.
Have you checked the level of the oil in the rear end? If this was mine I would drain and refill the gear oil in the differential using a friction modifier before anything else. If that didn't help I'd get into the more expensive stuff and replace the axle seal either way.
Yes I checked the fluid level and it was correct. We found a local axle guy that was highly recommended so I'm going to let him drive the truck and see what he thinks the problem might be. With the diff fluid getting that hot, the whine, the popping/clunking and the axle seal leaking I don't think replacing the fluid is going to do much.
