I have a 312 v8 with a single groove harmonic balancer. I was going to put on power steering and found no groove to drive a second belt. Can I use another balancer or is this motor externally balanced? Would there be any vibration problems? The belt on the truck drives the generator. Any suggestions?
I believe the 292 balancer will work, they have multi-groove pulleys. I bought one that was multi for about $75 it was hard to find though. I think the externals are the same on 312 and 292. Are you sure it's a 312, those came in T-birds and I thought those had PS so they would have extra grooves. just my 2cents.

Reason: adding info
When I rebuilt the motor many years ago the machine shop checked the dimensions and said it was a 312. So to put on power steering I will need another balancer. I thought the 292 would work but I needed to ask. The motor was in the truck when I got it. The truck has manual steering and I want power steering.

These Y-blocks had a lot f meat to bore, did they tell you rod length or tell you main journal size. the 312 had large mains and there for were prone to block damage ant main cap bolts. It is possible to get a 312 ci by just boring cylinders. I though 60 over did that..... the 312 had major difference on crank. I want the 312 internals and turn down mains like I did for my brand x383 I built. If your up for the money you can buy a liquid filled one for like $350 last time I checked.
Since I have a 1 groove dampner can I run all accesories off one belt?
Thanks
Jerry
You might but it would be really rough on the bearings for all. also harder to get all componts tight enough. I'd hold out for a multi groove pulley. I got one from a 63 F100, it was OE. They did not have ps but it was there.
yes I did look at bolt on pulleys. I purchased one from Summit racing. went on like a charm. I eye balled it to see if it would line up with my power steering pump and pulley set up. The pulley bolted on the with the large bolt from the balancer. Also do you know the bolt size for the two small bolts on the balancer? I only had the large main bolt on my balancer.

You don't need to change the balancer, because...
Ford offered accessory outer pulleys that bolted to the balancer to add P/S

So Jerry any updates on the balancer dilema? I have located a 292/312 motor over here but it's about 3 hrs away. Found add on craigslist and I'm trying to get more info on it. I personally don't need another 292 but I would concider making the run if it had what you needed. $75 for motor isn't bad if all there...I really thinking about it anyway just for extra parts.
