Consummatum est
It is finished.
On March 24 of this year I started to tear down the engine on my 2007 F350 King Ranch. 5 months later I finished the job. Is this close to a record?
93k miles
Heads re-surfaced, O-rings, and valve guides installed
Exhaust manifolds re-surfaced
Bulletproof Diesel:
Air oil cooler
Remote filter
2 micron filter
ARP studs
Ford factory head gaskets
New standpipes
New dummy plugs
Blue spring upgrade
EGR cooler
All needed gaskets, d-rings and O-rings
O-ring sets and copper washer for each injector
New plastic ball retainers for lifters
Metalized plastic Bulletproof Diesel badges x 2
New Motorcraft exhaust manifold bolts
New Motorcraft glow plug harnesses
Cleaned EGR valve
Cleaned intake manifold etc.
Cleaned turbo freed coked up vanes
CAT ELC coolant
I have put on just over 500 miles. Runs like a champ. No 20psi degas bottle pressure 50 feet from start of test for EGR/head gaskets leaks. (Warmed up, accelerate hard up a hill and read Guage attached to degas bottle). Before new head gaskets instant 20 psi.
I am a registered nurse with a 3 car garage. BMW 325 CiC convertible (factory hardtop left on this summer to protect soft top ) and BMW 530i camped outside while repairs were made to the truck. Work schedule really impacted the time available to do the work. Tomorrow we go to the beach with the boat behind the truck. Park boat then retrieve 5th wheel from storage less than 5 miles from campground.
Nice to have the work done but would not be afraid to go in again if necessary. Amazing how my perspective of the 6.0 has changed. Totally intimidated at start of job. Now? Not so much.
Proof that nearly ANYONE can do this work given enough time.
Hardest part was getting the Y pipe to seal. Finally disconnected ypipe to manifold clamps both sides, loosened EGR cooler clamp, and of course exhaust disconnected from turbo. Pedestal loosened just for grins. Easy easy easy to line up. I have great pics of the misalignment and correct alignment. Will try to post pics. Also had long crank time issue after I first put it together. HPOP pressure was fine but started at 0psi at every start. Removed ICP sensor and no oil present. Ah Hah! Problem on right side. Pulled valve cover and removed dummy plug. The nylon washer had overlapped itself and was leaking high pressure oil from the oil rail. New dummy plug fixed it. Cheap fix!
Anyway, glad it's done. Now I have to rebuild the VANOS (variable valve timing) on the vert. Should be a cake walk compared to the 6.0!!!!!!!

No contest for how fast Loren, just make sure it is done right. When assembling the engine you fill the high pressure pump reservoir with oil. You cannot be shy about cranking on the starter for minutes at first initial start up to purge the system of air, short cranks will be a frustrating futile effort. Some guys have upgraded to the 6.4L starter which I guess is a direct fit.
Initially take the truck out varying RPM's and it will take a few days to purge air for normal start up time. Quick tip for removing the down pipe from the turbo, loosen band clamp, go under the truck and give the pipe a quick kick with your foot.

I would hate to think how much time I would put into
an engine build even if I had a deadline. But that is my
OCD and Aircraft mechanic's side showing. Can't pull
the plane over at a cloud and step out and fix it.
Good job on tackling this. First time can be a bit overwhelming.
