I just installed headman headers and a new free flow cat.the cat is smaller that the factory. It is about a foot long. I also installed the Gibson exhuast.
I read all the threads on the headmans. And I also had the. Flanges welded to the pipes to prevent them from pulling the flange over the cups.
No check engine light. But the exhuast is super hot. Or should I say I touched my new chrome tip with my finger and it burned. Then I put my boot on it and it melted the soul. This is all while the truck is idling after driving to a gas station.
I know these are not scientific measurments. But does this seem strange and a sight of eminent failure of a part.
My first thought is the new free flow cato is way to small.
I take it it's not a dual wall tip? I can grab mine after hours of blasting down the freeway at 85... How long was it running before the gas station? Time-wise not distance, as idling still cooks the exhaust system.
Also, it's metal and it is experiencing some pretty high temperatures. My 7.3 idles at 400°F... Turbo application so different temp range I'm sure, but still. The exhaust gets way too hot to touch on damn near every vehicle I currently own or have owned. After all, there's no insulation or thermal barriers, and it's not all that thick either.
You have freer flowing exhaust now too don't forget, which means it'll move the air further, faster, so heat dissapation isn't happening in the same spots as stock.
Length of cat shouldn't really be an issue, just like mufflers come in different lengths.
Give it a week and see what's up, or find an infrared temp gun and maybe some other 6.8 members could post up their temps.
I was told about touching exhaust pipes about the same age as I was told about touching hot stoves...
just sayin
Same here, except for that one fateful day as a 17-yr old punk when I was chatting up some hottie and leaned against my freshly turned-off motorcycle on the right side. In shorts. Ah hormones... I was quite proud of myself for not letting my expression and still-maturing vocal cords give away my mistake.
I used to have side exit exhaust on my Explorer in high school. It sounded great and looked fantastic to me. But I used to haul a lot of friends around and let me tell you, that little 4.0 V6 would get those tips HOT. There are about 15 people with scars on their legs from the tips.
You can see the tips under the passenger side rear door.
