2007 escape

2007 escape
When started very high idle after hitting gas pedal sometimes it will lower idle sometimes not,,then holding pressure on gas pedal it has very bad surging ... Any guesses what might be and possible cost fix?? I am no mechanic,will have to take it somewhere...90,000 miles on it..

First suspect to me would be the IAC. Idle Air Control. It allows air into the engine to regulate idle speed. It can get gummed up. Removal & cleaning with carb cleaner sometimes helps. Do not let carb cleaner into the engine unless it says 'catalytic converter safe' to avoid possible expensive damage to converters.
Surging can be fuel, air, or ignition. How old is the air cleaner element? How many miles? Is it such that you can see light through it when held up in front of the sun?
How long since spark plug change? It is about that time, and you are risking COP damage with older plugs & larger gaps.
Do you have any problem climbing hills? If so, that COULD indicate a fuel supply or lack thereof problem.
If you REALLY rev the engine in neutral, it will cut out by computer control to prevent inadvertent damage by ignoramuses, or purposeful damage by those with evil intent.

I believe the air filter was not sealed good,,redid it took drive seemed fine on idle and running....THANKS....Hopefully that was the problem,,will take drive again tomorrow..
