I changed my oil on my Ex recently. All was going well until it came to refit the sump plug and refill with oil. I looked up the torque setting for the plug, adjusted the torque wrench to those settings and started tightening. The wrench never clicked, and when I tried to unscrew the oil drain plug, it wouldn't come out. Now it just rotates, neither tightening or loosening. I have applied a load of rtv sealant around the plug and so far it isn't leaking, but I'll need to change the oil in the future, so what do I do.
I do not fancy the idea (or cost) of removing the engine to change the oil pan. Is there a way of drilling out the sump plug, then re-tapping the hole to accept a larger diameter sump plug? Or possibly removing the oil pan to fit a replacement without taking the engine out?
This must have happened to other Ex owners, so I am throwing myself onto your mercy and knowledge.
If you get the stripped one out, hopefully it is the threads on the plug and not the pan's threads, then use this: EZ Oil Drain Valve - Home
I have had mine for years and it works great. I'm sure that you can re-thread the pan to the next size up if the threads are buggered up, or chase them with a tap if they are not too bad. Dorman used to have over-size drain plugs too, for just such and occasion.
