Last time i changed my oil it looked lie the plug could possibly be cross threaded.. what do you guys suggest to fix this? I need to change my oil soon and i dont want to run into problems plugging the pan
to all the haters: no one has had an example of one of these "coming open" by accident, even on a trail. people have mentioned mean people could drain your oil in a parking lot or something...give me a break. some will complain that $25 is way to much to spend when a regular plug is $3. well...seems worth it to me (end of rant)
o, and as to your cross-thread problem - no idea. only thought is that it might be possible to drill an new one. guy i know drilled a drain hole in his diff and had a plug put in.
Most auto parts places will have a stripped pan replacement plug. Slightly oversized and threads cut their way in. You certainly are not the first person with the problem.
Might not even be in the first 10,000 people.
Good luck Frank
I'd be sure to check the pan threads before getting the self threading plug as well. The way it was explained to me by a Ford tech, the plug is made of softer metal than the bung in the pan, that way if someone does cross thread the plug, the chances of the pan getting ganked are much less. That's not to say your pan isn't cross- threaded, just that I'd suggest you have a look at the threads first.
Every time I had a Ford, car or truck, mechanics always warned me not to crank that plug too tight because it'll strip the plug threads. They said the pan threads will hold up OK but the plugs are soft metal.

Those quick-drain plugs are great. I have seen a couple versions, and it'll save time over the course of a few oil changes plus you're not even dealing with the threads..
As for butt-holes who drain oil in parking lots, well, if they're inclined to do something like that to somebody's truck, they'll open a regular plug just as quick.
