That's the gist of it. The transmission has a few gotcha's, like a bunch of wires and the torque converter that needs to be unbolted first.
Generally, I think the only thing you would really actually need the service manual for is for disassembly/repair of the transmission itself, and axle service (replacing bearings, etc...). Those components have very tight tolerances and procedures to rebuild them.
It's up to you, really. If you feel its worth $140 for the factory service manual, go ahead. Me personally? I just use my shade-tree intuition, and google for anything I can't figure out.
