302 timing marks?

I ran into a problem with my uncles old truck. We dropped a 302 out of a 80 T-Bird in it. Got it running fine. The specs said timing should be set to 6 deg btc.. So thats how I set it. Some how the water pump shaft broke, so he is trying to make the manufacturer replace the radiator it destroyed.

They say the engine must have been out of time and caused the Shaft to break.

So what i need to know since I haven't timed a ford engine in about 12 years. The markings on the damper show 10, 20, 30... Now if I'm correct about this that would mean each short line =2 degrees... Correct? There are 4 short lines then the one with the 10. That should be at 6 deg...

I want to make sure I'm right before arguing with them.

one other question. What could cause the water pump shaft to break?

Thanks.

302 timing marks?

Well that is what I thought also. I talked to a guy I know that has been a machanic for over 25 years. he said that he has seen it do that many times. Something about if it is out of timing, it will cause the engine to jerk real quick and snap the shaft.

I still dont understand that. The water pump is a free moving part unless it locks up. So how could the timing cause one to break. Doesn't make sense to me either.

The guy at Oreilly's auto parts said that it would either be in the water pump locked up or the Clutch fan. In which I dont see how a clutch fan could cause one to break either. If the clutch locked up, it still wouldn't cause on to break the shaft. Atleast not that I can see. There is no play in the Clutch and it spins like it should. So I doubt that being the problem.

I beleive it was the water pump. After it happened, I tried turning the shaft and it wouldn't turn. After it could down the shaft turned fine.

Thanks for the reply. I thought I was right about the timing marks.
