Yes, that's the original ammeter. If you follow the large output wire of the alternator from the alternator to the junction in the wiring harness, you will run across a piece in the wire with two smaller wires on either side. This piece is a shunt. On either side of the shunt are the smaller wires and these travel in to the factory ammeter. The factory ammeter "samples" the voltage drop across this shunt and moves the needle as current passes through the shunt.
Just buy a real voltage gauge from anywhere and install it somewhere and you will be about 40 years ahead of that worthless ammeter, if your into working factory gauges and pure stock look there is a guy converting these to be real voltage gauges (dont remember the business name)
