My Voltmeter gauge.

I have a 1992 f150 xlt 302 and my volt meter gauge is reading 17,18 or 16 it varies on days. I had to put a new alternator since the stock one gave out. What is causing my voltmeter gauge to move up in down on certain days?

Poor grounds are the main cause of intermittent electrical problems and will cause higher than normal voltage output. Check grounding between regulator and alternator, alternator and engine and engine to battery. Also check the three pin connector to the regulator for corrosion. High resistance in those circuits will also cause high voltages because the regulator thinks the voltage is too low.
